U.S. Civilian Contractor Killed in Rocket Attack in Iraq, Thousands Storm U.S. Embassy in Iraq
A U.S. civilian contractor was killed Friday in a rocket attack on a base near Kirkuk, Iraq, where U.S. service members and civilian contractors were located. Several U.S. and Iraqi military members were wounded in the attack and U.S. officials said Iran-backed fighters were responsible. On Tuesday, thousands of angry supporters of an Iranian-backed militia stormed entrances to the U.S. Embassy in Iraq. They hung the flags of their militia on the barbed wire protecting the compound and chanted, “Death to America.” Killing a U.S. contractor, firing on American troops and storming the U.S. Embassy are serious provocations that expose how Iran uses regional proxies to attack Americans and endanger our allies. The United States must cut off Iran’s ability to fund these actions and prevent the
arms embargo from being lifted in October 2020.

Iran’s Leader Ordered Crackdown on Unrest
Last month, anti-government protests erupted throughout Iran. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei told his top security and government officials to do whatever it takes to stop the protestors. That order was confirmed by three sources close to the supreme leader’s inner circle. The order was set in motion by the bloodiest crackdown on protestors since the Islamic Revolution in 1979. About 1,500 people were killed during less than two weeks of unrest that started on Nov. 15. The toll, provided to Reuters by three Iranian interior ministry officials, included at least 17 teenagers and about 400 women, as well as some members of the security forces and police.

Israeli Leaders Taken to Shelter as Red Alert Sirens Sound in Ashkelon
Last Wednesday, red alert sirens wailed in southern Israel as Palestinian terrorists in Gaza fired a rocket toward Israelis. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who was in Ashkelon for a political rally, was escorted to a sheltered area. The event was also attended by Mayor of Ashkelon Tomer Glam, Israeli ministers and several members of the Knesset. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesperson said in a statement that "one projectile was fired from the Gaza Strip towards Israeli territory and was intercepted by the Iron Dome Aerial Defense System." Channel 12 News reported that, according to Gaza sources, top Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) commander Khalil Bathani was behind the attack.

U.S.-Israel Fund to Invest $6.4 Million in Seven Joint Clean-Energy R&D Projects
Seven joint U.S.-Israeli clean energy projects — including an energy-storing system for electric cars and a hydrogen-powered drone that takes off vertically — have received $6.4 million in funding from the U.S.-Israel binational research and development program for energy. The U.S. Department of Energy and Israel’s Energy Ministry, along with the Israel Innovation Authority, chose the seven clean energy projects as part of the Binational Industrial Research and Development (BIRD) Energy program. The total value of the projects is $15.4 million, which includes $9 million of cost-share funding from the companies selected for funding, BIRD said in a statement on Sunday.
