MICHIGAN COALITION FOR RESPONSIBLE GUN OWNERS "Promoting safe use and ownership of firearms through education, litigation, and legislation." MONDAY E'NEWS Moving Forward Republican control of at least one chamber in the Michigan Legislature has been a wall holding back consideration of gun control legislation for the past four decades. That era is coming to an end. Democrats have won control of the Michigan House with a bare 56-54 majority. Democrats will also have a majority in the Senate having won 20-18 seats. Will the new Michigan Legislature move rapidly to pass gun control laws? That could be difficult unless enough Republicans are on board to make up for the absences and defections of Democratic legislators. Voter concerns about rising crime rates in the wake of decarceration and defunding police may also curb enthusiasm for self-defense restrictions. Over 20 legislative seats were decided by thin margins and may swing back in 2024. MCRGO is prepared for the new political reality. Its focus on greater inclusion over the past decade has helped build an organization that now benefits from broad diversity. This has been driven in large part by increased demand for concealed pistol license training from non-traditional gun owners. Modern rifle sales are also booming with all age groups and especially with younger gun owners. MCRGO has responded with a new Modern Rifle course. Finally, the recent United States Supreme Court decision in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association Inc. v. Bruen has provided a powerful tool for state and national gun groups to overturn heavy-handed gun control laws. Anticipate increased activity on the legal front in the coming weeks and months. MCRGO Foundation Appeal I am proud to have contributed in a small way to the outcome in the U.S. Supreme Court decision in the Bruen case by filing an amicus brief on behalf of my client, the Crime Prevention Research Center. Much like Heller in 2008, Bruen has opened floodgates of new Second Amendment litigation and has an influence on pending cases such as the one my client, Josh Wade, and I brought back in 2015 against the gun ban at the University of Michigan. When we appealed the Court of Appeals' erroneous ruling to the Michigan Supreme Court, we couldn't anticipate that the case would be delayed for several years due to pending actions at SCOTUS. But here we are 7 years later: back to square one with our case remanded back down to the Michigan Court of Appeals with some guidance from Justice Viviano's well-written and thorough concurring opinion. We are satisfied with this most recent victory. However the fight goes on and will likely continue for months, or even years, to come. Even with my client's own contribution and my time significantly discounted, we'll be applying for funding from the NRA Civil Rights Defense Fund as well as the MCRGO Foundation. Your tax-deductible donation to the MCRGO Foundation would be very helpful both with this case and others to come.
