Democrats Maintain Control of Senate

Fox News: Democrats will maintain power in the Senate thanks to Democratic Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto being declared the winner in Nevada on Saturday night in her race against Republican challenger Adam Laxalt. Democrats now hold 50 seats compared to the 49 seats held by Republicans with one seat yet to be decided in Georgia where a runoff election will be held between Republican Herschel Walker and Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock on December 6th. Even if Walker were to win in Georgia, Democrats would still have control with Vice President Kamala Harris’s tie-breaking vote (Fox News).

Biden Administration Pauses Applications for Student Loan Forgiveness
CBS: The Biden Administration’s plan to provide up to $20,000 in loan relief for student borrowers is now halted after a federal judge in Texas blocked the program and declared it “unlawful,” raising questions and financial uncertainty for the roughly 40 million Americans who qualify for debt forgiveness. Already, 26 million people have applied to the program since the application went live in October. But after the ruling on Thursday, the Biden administration stopped taking applications for its student debt forgiveness program (CBS). Washington Examiner: In a separate legal battle over the debt relief plan, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 8th Circuit granted a stay against the program after six Republican-led states sued. The plan to cancel outstanding student debt will cost the country roughly $400 billion, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, while another budget model pegged the cost at nearly $1 trillion (Washington Examiner).

Senator Warren Believes Biden Has the Authority to Cancel Student Debt, Accuses Courts of Playing Politics
Daily Wire: Appearing on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday, Warren told host Chuck Todd that Biden had the authority since former Presidents Barack Obama and Donald Trump forgave some debt during their tenure. Warren then lashed out at the Texas judge who ruled that canceling debts was illegal, claiming that loan forgiveness was evidence that Democrats fight for working Americans (Daily Wire). Meet the Press: @SenWarren (D-Mass.) says she has no doubt President Biden has the authority to carry out his student debt forgiveness plan. “If [the Texas court is] going to play politics instead of following the law, they’re going to put the program at risk” (Twitter).

Hugh Hewitt: “It’s time to unify around Speaker Kevin McCarthy”
Ed Atsinger: Despite Republican losses of the White House and a Senate majority in the 2020 election, McCarthy was able to do the impossible: secure a net gain of 14 seats in the House. His fundraising prowess brought in over $100 million to that election cycle, more campaign funds than his two predecessors combined. Once again, McCarthy sought out and recruited an outstanding group of candidates – including the most women and minority candidates in Republican election history. He was able to help raise an astonishing amount of money, blowing all records with almost a half billion dollars, for Republican efforts to recapture the House. On election day 2022, McCarthy’s efforts and years of hard work paid off — he delivered a Republican Majority (Townhall). Hugh Hewitt: Republicans in the House Caucus should move quickly to install the leader as the Speaker-designate along with Steve Scalise as Majority Leader. McCarthy has done a superb job of holding a diverse caucus together over many years in leadership and especially since 2018. It’s time to unify around Speaker Kevin McCarthy (Daybreak Daily).

Nancy Pelosi Supports Biden Running for Second Presidential Term
Insider: During an appearance on ABC’s “This Week” with host George Stephanopoulos, the California Democrat was enthusiastic about a second Biden term. The party is coming off a midterm election cycle where the party defied historical norms by holding onto the Senate and potentially maintaining control of the House — a prospect that most political observers thought was highly unlikely (Insider). RNC Research: “Do you think President Biden should run again?” NANCY PELOSI: “Oh yes I do…Biden has been a great president” (Twitter).

Democrat Leadership Looks to Address the Debt Ceiling
Reuters: Congressional Democratic leaders on Sunday vowed to tackle the nation’s debt ceiling in coming weeks, saying their party’s election victories offer them leverage even as Republicans have promised a potentially explosive fight. U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said they would act while President Joe Biden’s fellow Democrats control both chambers (Reuters). Bloomberg: Even with party control of the House undecided on Sunday after the Nov. 8 midterm elections, Pelosi cited Republican threats to use the debt-limit extension “to cut” Medicare and Social Security… A debt-limit standoff in Congress would carry echoes of the 2011 crisis, when the US came within two days of defaulting on its debt (Bloomberg).

Church Attendance Remains Lower Than Pre-Pandemic Levels
Christian Post: Nearly three years after the COVID-19 pandemic forced churches across the United States to shut their doors, many attendees have yet to return, even as the vast majority of churches have resumed in-person services. Lifeway Research released the results of a phone survey of 1,000 Protestant pastors conducted from Sept. 6 through Sept. 30, 2022. The findings reflect more anecdotal reports from ministries of all sizes, which are still struggling to regain their pre-pandemic form (Christian Post). Christian Headlines: A separate Lifeway survey from this year found that 34 percent of Christians said they attended worship service four or more times a month pre-pandemic. Only 26 percent of Christians in April 2022 answered that way. In the same time frame, the percentage of Christians who say they attend church less than once a month grew from 36 percent to 43 percent (Christian Headlines).

New Polling Indicates Governor DeSantis is Favored Over Trump
New York Post: A new national poll gives Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis a 7-point edge over former President Donald Trump in a potential presidential primary battle, the first survey of the 2024 cycle to do so — and the first poll since February 2016 to point to a weakening of Trump’s GOP dominance. The YouGov poll found that 42% of Republicans and GOP-leaning independents prefer DeSantis over Trump as the party’s 2024 standard-bearer, while 35% of those surveyed remain in the 45th president’s corner (New York Post).

Poll Shows Hiring Managers Engage in Reverse Discrimination
Resume Builder: Over the past several years, companies big and small have been making public their efforts to improve DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion) initiatives. As detailed by Glassdoor, many companies have made the connection that DEI is not only good for society, but also good for business. However, in recent months there has been a buzz around what some are terming “reverse discrimination” in hiring, wherein companies are passing over members of racial and gender majorities in service of meeting DEI benchmarks. And with the Supreme Court again hearing arguments against affirmative action, these same issues continue to be debated across multiple realms (Resume Builder). Washington Examiner: It’s obviously discriminatory and violates federal laws, including Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. However, such a report won’t receive widespread media scrutiny or the attention of politicians because, well, it is white males who are being discriminated against. Racism, discrimination, and prejudice are permitted, and sometimes even actively encouraged, when it involves white males (Washington Examiner).

Conservative Radio Personality Jim Bohannon Passes Away of Cancer
Washington Examiner: Conservative talk radio host Jim Bohannon died Saturday at the age of 78 of esophageal cancer. Bohannon stepped down from his popular Jim Bohannon Show last month, citing health concerns. He had hosted the show for over 30 years and was featured on the Westwood One radio network for 40 (Washington Examiner).
