Dear John,
Last year, climate-related catastrophes worldwide forced an estimated 24 million people from their homes. Unbelievably, these climate refugees have no special recognition or protections under the law.
We think this is unacceptable and are working hard to push our federal government to recognize the plight of displaced communities. But we need your help.
Sign the petition: Demand Congress pass legislation to support climate refugees.
The world is in the midst of the largest refugee crisis since World War II. According to the UN, the number of displaced people worldwide has risen to 70.8 million — and a third of these people are fleeing devastating climate events. War and poverty have long been recognized as a cause of mass migration. But a lack of consensus on what constitutes a climate refugee has stymied any real efforts to address the growing crisis of climate migration.
Fortunately, law-makers in the US are beginning to see the strong connection between climate change and mass migration. Bills are being introduced to provide the necessary legal protection for climate-displaced people as well as humanitarian aid and relocating services for those forced from their homes.
Sign here to let your legislators know that you support such innovative legislation and that you’ve got their back.
It is a sad truth that the regions of the world that are least responsible for causing the climate crisis are the most vulnerable to its devastating effects. It is estimated that by the year 2050 Latin America, Sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia will generate 143 million more climate migrants. This is an unfolding human travesty that can no longer be ignored.
As the world’s richest country and the 2nd largest emitter of greenhouse gases, we have a responsibility to ease the suffering of climate refugees. Demand bold, long-term solutions that support migrant families displaced by climate change.
With your help we can change the status quo.
