Friends: Heroic emergency responders and organizations often claim to be “the first to arrive and the last to leave.” In a world where emergencies happen all the time, that is a necessary and helpful way of working, but it isn’t how the PIH team operates. -
We’re not primarily an emergency response organization. We’re a medical and social justice organization, partnered directly with communities in 11 countries, providing direct care to millions per year. When outbreaks occur or disasters strike, our way of operating means we’re more than ready.

Empowered by contributions from PIHers like you, our teams aren’t the first to arrive when an outbreak occurs—because we’re already there. We partner with communities for the long term, building health systems based on equity, and quietly laying the groundwork to stop an outbreak long before one starts.

And, we’re not the last to leave, because we don’t pack up once the emergency is contained. We stay, reinforcing our open-ended commitment to the health systems we serve on four continents. We keep providing care, building health systems, and preparing for the next pandemic to emerge.
