Other VFW posts on Long Island have received needed repairs in the past year amid struggling membership and revenue lost during the pandemic from renting out their halls for events. VFW posts across Long Island and the country have faced needed repairs to older buildings while struggling to recruit new, younger veteran members...Last year, Rep. Andrew Garbarino (R-Bayport) led [efforts] for the Brentwood VFW to get a new roof after he noted VFW halls across Long Island had to shut down, losing rental revenue during the pandemic. The Brentwood VFW, which has 70 members, down from 400 members 20 years ago, was at risk of closing. Brentwood Post Commander Sabrina Lacy said she is still working to replace the roof and make repairs to the VFW Hall. Last week, nearly 100 volunteers helped fix up the 1956 building and property, painting the outside of the building and hanging signs, but more work is needed, Lacy said. She said the building needs to be repaired to continue to help feed homeless veterans and provide outreach support and job training. " Click Here To Read The Full Article. WHAT'S NEW IN NY-02 Andrew Thanks Veterans At Ronkonkoma Middle School This week, Andrew participated in a Ronkonkoma Middle School Veterans Day assembly for student's friends and family. Andrew gave remarks outlining his commitment to supporting our veterans and thanked the school for taking the time to honor our veterans this week. Andrew Supports Veterans Prostate Cancer Screening Event Earlier this week, Catholic Health partnered with elected officials and the Sayville American Legion to bring prostate cancer screening to our local veterans. Andrew was proud to support this event bringing preventative screenings and health care directly to our veterans who need it. KEEPING UP WITH CONGRESS Andrew Helps Introduce Bill To Protect Veterans From Scams This week, Andrew helped introduce a bipartisan bill to improve protections for veterans against mail fraud. Veterans are twice as likely as the general public to fall victim to scams, and four out of five military/veteran adults report being the target of scams directly related to their military service or benefits. The Veterans Protection from Fraud Act would add up to 10 years to a prison sentence for a criminal convicted of committing or conspiracy to commit telemarketing or email marketing fraud that targeted a veteran of any age.
