Democrats swept the elections for Cook County officials Tuesday night.

Toni Preckwinkle was elected to a fourth term as Cook County Board President, capturing 67 percent of the vote. Republican opponent Bob Fioretti won 30 percent of the vote, and Libertarian Thea Tsatsos won 3 percent.

Preckwinkle, an alumnus of the University of Chicago for her bachelor's and master's degrees, served five terms as alderwoman of the 4th Ward in the Chicago City Council before being elected County Board President. She defeated incumbent Todd Stroger in the primary in 2010 and went on to win the general election.

Fioretti served two terms as alderman of the 2nd Ward in the Chicago City Council. He ran unsuccessfully for Mayor of Chicago in 2015 and 2019, and for County Board President in 2018. He also lost the Democratic primary for the 5th District in the Illinois State Senate in 2016, and the Democratic primary for Cook County State's Attorney in 2020.

Fioretti switched to the Republican Party for his County Board run this year.

Meanwhile, Democratic incumbent Fritz Kaegi won reelection as Cook County Assessor, capturing 81.5 percent of the vote compared with 18 percent for Libertarian Nico Tsatsoulis.

Two of the most powerful women in Cook County Democratic politics — Toni Preckwinkle and Karen Yarbrough — easily defeated their GOP challengers, Bob Fioretti and Tony Peraica.

Preckwinkle led the race for Cook County Board president all night against Fioretti, a former Chicago alderman, and Libertarian Thea Tsatsos, winning by a wide margin — 67% to 30% and 3%, with 96.7% precincts reporting.

Preckwinkle said she was comfortable declaring victory, saying in her fourth term she will “focus on the distribution of Cook County’s $1 billion in American Rescue Plan Act funding.”

Preckwinkle winning her fourth term leading the Cook County Board of Commissioners sets the stage for her holding that office longer than anyone except George W. Dunne, the party stalwart who served nearly 22 years.

The Hyde Park Democrat faced a repeat foe in Fioretti, who has run six campaigns in seven years for four different offices. He challenged Preckwinkle for her seat four years ago — although this time he did so as a Republican.

Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle secured a fourth term in office, defeating Republican challenger Bob Fioretti.

A day after securing her seat, Preckwinkle said in an interview with “Chicago Tonight” there are multiple goals she hopes to focus on during her next term.

“One is increasing our investments in behavioral health,” Preckwinkle said.

“We’re going to create a department of behavioral health services and we’re going to have an asset inventory and figure out where we need to make investments,” she added.

Preckwinkle also highlighted Cook County’s guaranteed income program, which is the largest publicly funded program of its kind.

“Two years, $500 a month for 3,250 families in Cook County and the lottery will be coming up shortly. We’ve had more than 200,000 people apply, so there is a great need out there,” Preckwinkle said.

“I’m hopeful that we are part of a national movement that will encourage the federal government, in my lifetime, to do a guaranteed income … nationally not just here in Illinois” she added.
