My personal condolences and reflection on the passing of Commissioner Nick Fish.
** “This afternoon when we heard the news of Commissioner Nick Fish's passing, my heart broke for his family and loved ones. Lets hope to one day find a cure to this deadly disease that has taken so many lives.
We met in September 2010 after gun violence took the life of my nephew. Having access to leaders in City Hall was important to my family. Learning the roles of our city leaders and how to utilize process were the tools we needed to engage in the war on violence. Since then Commissioner Fish has provided inspiration, motivation and on one occasion, encouragement, to continue my research and advocacy for improving civic participation.
A memory I’d like to share is when I brought in community members to provide testimony against Portland's involvement in the Joint Terrorism Task Force back in February of 2015. After hours of statements, Commissioner Fish invited some of the children who attended with their parents into his office, passing out snacks while explaining the meaning of public service while also answering questions about the constitution and civil rights. Though we didn’t always see eye to eye on things, his words of encouragement to these children spoke volumes. Anyone who stands up to make change as an elected official truly loves our city, and Commissioner Fish proved that with his continued tenure in Portland’s City Council.”
