Friends — I know we are all waiting with bated breath for the final results in Senate and House races across the country. We should all be proud that so many voters across the country have rejected Republicans’ far-right agenda and their so-called red wave. And in the meantime, we have some major, definitive wins to celebrate for our progressive movement!
First, here in Minnesota, your grassroots support helped us not only increase our campaign’s vote share by 10 percentage points over 2020 — but bring in more votes for me in MN-05 than any other House candidate in the state!
We also helped Attorney General Keith Ellison, who fights every day to help Minnesotans live with safety, dignity, and respect, defeat his Republican, hedge fund lawyer challenger who has committed his career to propping up corporations and joining anti-abortion groups.
Governor Tim Walz and Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan had incredible re-election wins, and Democrats won the entire state legislature. We saw progressives declare victory up and down the ballot across the state and in MN-05, including career public defender Mary Moriarty in the Hennepin County Attorney race.
We’ve seen amazing wins on the national level, too. My friend Summer Lee is joining the Squad in Congress after she won her race in PA-12. Maxwell Frost in FL-10 is another strong progressive who is coming to Washington — he’s a longtime organizer and will be the first Gen Z member of Congress at a time when we need more young voices than ever. Becca Balint will be the first woman and openly LGBTQ+ member of Congress to represent Vermont. And Delia Ramirez in Illinois and Greg Casar in Texas are two more young, progressive leaders headed to the People’s House.
And we saw a Somali wave — we now have nearly 40 Somalians elected across the country, just years after Donald Trump tried to ban us.
It’s no coincidence that young voter turnout was one of the highest on record for midterms in the past 30 years — second only to when voters showed up to take back the House when I was first elected in 2018.
Despite the mainstream media and pundits overwhelmingly reporting that we’d see a “red wave,” young voters made their voices heard and once again delivered a mandate for bold, progressive change. They rejected the GOP’s anti-abortion agenda and stood up for our democracy.
But our work is far from over. We need to keep building progressive power in every state and at every level of government. We need to keep moving the needle on progressive priorities like Medicare for All and universal school meals. And we need to fight back against Republicans’ hate at every opportunity.
That’s why I’m asking you: Can you pitch in any amount to continue our work for progress? We’ve made incredible strides and we can’t stop our momentum now.
