Dear John

In his first week as Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak reinstated the ban on fracking after the moratorium was lifted by his predecessor, Liz Truss.

This is a huge campaign win for us at CPRE and your actions helped make a difference – whether you signed the petition, wrote to your MP or spoke out on social media. Thank you for being a part of it.

But the fight against ongoing threats to our countryside continues. With COP27 progressing, we’re calling on Rishi Sunak to not cop out of the net zero future our countryside depends on and stop the Cumbrian coal mine from going ahead. Scroll down to get our full comment below.

During autumn, there's still plenty of wildlife to spot on your walks in your local countryside or green space. From busy hedgehogs to starling murmurations, read on for what to look out for this month.

As the festive season approaches, we wanted to let you know that this year, you can buy or send an e-card to support our work. Every personalised card or e-card you send will make a difference - find out more below.

Now the nights are growing longer and darker, stargazing season is upon us and it'll soon be time for our annual Star Count. We’re excited to share Star Count 2023 will be taking place 17 – 24 February 2023, so please save the date for your diaries!

Fracking ban reinstated by Rishi Sunak

CPRE has long campaigned against fracking, and this year we launched an explosive petition to ensure local voices were heard that garnered over 80,000 signatures. Thank you for helping us send a clear message to government: local communities didn’t accept fracking in 2019, and won’t in 2022.

‘Beggars belief’ – we comment on third Cumbria coal mine delay

Just days before the start of COP27, the government decided to delay its decision on the Cumbrian coal mine for a third time. With the climate crisis presenting the biggest threat to our countryside, opening the first coal mine in 30 years would be a regressive, damaging move. It also contradicts the government’s own pledge to invest in green infrastructure, achieve net zero and permanently phase out coal.

A countryside walk in November

During November, autumn gently ebbs away as the last of the leaves fall. Towards the end of the month, much of our natural world breathes a deep sigh before their winter rest. But, before that happens, there’s still plenty of wildlife activity. Read on to find out more.
