Today is Veterans Day. And if I were a betting man, I would say you have a family member or friend who bravely served in our armed forces. Maybe even you served in our military. If that’s the case, I want to say thank you.
Today is a day to remember and honor our courageous men and women—from this generation and those that came before—for risking their lives so that those at home can live in freedom and safety. Our veterans’ selflessness and heroism can never be forgotten.
Sadly, some dirtbags don’t see it the same way. They see our veterans as a group to be preyed upon and an easy way to make a quick buck.
Scammers from the depths of their mothers' basements are targeting those who served and fleecing them out of their hard-earned dollars. In 2021 alone, fraud cost veterans, service members, and their families $267 million, a 162 percent increase from 2020.
That’s why I’ve sponsored legislation to add up to 10 years to the sentence of a criminal convicted for targeting military veterans through the mail or by phone. Mess with the bull, you get the horns.
To end on a positive note—I hope you can spend this meaningful day enjoying the blessings of freedom with your loved ones. And be sure to let a veteran know you’re grateful for his or her sacrifice.
