John, so about that “Red Wave…”
Thanks to Gen Z, Black, brown and working class voters, we saved this election from a Red Wave. Two elections in a row, young people proved that Gen Z is a vital voting bloc that can and will be the bedrock of the Democratic Party.
We showed up because we saw investment in us and the crises we face every day. But that investment only came from movements like ours who fought so hard for historic investments in climate action, student debt cancellation, and more.
And Democratic leadership is starting to notice that our age group is the most reliable voting bloc. From President Biden to pundits at MSNBC, we’re making an impact:
“Student debt relief drove young voters and more policies like that over the next two years will also drive them.”
“And climate…You talk about the Inflation Reduction Act, there were huge climate pieces. Biden’s climate agenda — large portions of it made it through — and there are activists [from] Sunrise…that came together around this particular issue.”
But, the fight isn't over. The climate crisis is still raging on. Fascism is still on the rise. Our generation is mobilized more than ever before, and we need to keep building our power to make sure Democratic leadership hears us.
Young people organize and get out the vote, are consistently voting for Democrats, yet at the same time, we are significantly overlooked and underinvested in.
If Democrats want to hold power, they must invest in young people. How?
Just as we propelled the Democratic Party to victory in 2018 and 2020, again on Tuesday, we helped save the day. But youth voters aren’t doing this out of the kindness of their hearts. We’re doing this because we are fighting for ourselves and our future: like climate action and the Green New Deal.
So regardless of what Dem leadership does, Sunrise and the youth climate movement will continue fighting right wing extremists in our elections and fighting to stop the climate crisis. And we need you in this fight, John.
In solidarity,
Ellen, Sunrise
