My name is Julia, and I am Resource Generation’s new Membership Director that supports RG’s integrated membership- and organizing-based fundraising strategy. If you don’t know already, RG is over 95% membership funded.
Why might you ask do RG members like you and me almost entirely fund our budget? There are logistical, obvious reasons… as people with access to wealth and class privilege we shouldn’t expect others to fund us and we definitely shouldn’t compete for funding with other organizations we’re in partnership with. But there’s more to it than that.
Our mission is to organize young people with wealth and class privilege to become transformative leaders working towards the equitable distribution of wealth, land and power. When we say “transformative leaders,” we’re not only talking about personal transformation. The true power of RG is 1,200 transformed member leaders coming together to organize for transformative changes to the status quo. Collective membership at RG is the root of our power.
As RG and our members developed our strategic planning framework for the next four years, we often came back to the same question – what is each of our roles as protagonists in winning collective liberation? Redistributing money is only the start. Personal transformation is only the start. Individual action is only the start. When we come together as members, we can collectively move $100 Million to movements, make redistribution a cultural norm, and rally behind campaigns to shift unjust power structures. When we come together, we have the power to shift minds, narrative, culture, and policies.
We are over $95 Million towards that goal of $100 Million in Redistribution Pledge to movements this year! Moving $100 Million is a major way we follow through on our commitment to movements and our mandate from them to be moving new money every year to the grassroots. If you haven’t filled out the pledge yet, please do so now so that [[link removed]] we can add your redistribution to our collective impact. The Redistribution Pledge also asks that you resource our national partners - the Movement for Black Lives and Center for Popular Democracy [[link removed]] , because collectivizing our giving and shifting power is part of our redistribution work.
With only one week left in our Fall Drive, now is the time to recommit yourself to the power of RG’s collective membership. We’re asking that you commit 5% of your overall redistribution to RG membership dues so that we can raise the remaining $1.6 Million RG needs to finish off 2022 strong.

RG is a political home that members have a sense of ownership over, shared stake in, and collective responsibility towards because together, we are more powerful. Here are some thoughts from a few members about why they’re part of RG and recommit to it year to year:
High Net Wealth Praxis has helped me re-imagine "what is enough?", and made redistribution feel more joyful and less scary. Having a community of peers and RG staff has helped disrupt the dominant narratives of hoarding, scarcity, guilt and shame associated with being a rich kid, and allowed me to develop more authentic solidarity with movements , people and organizations working for a more just world. - Urgyen J.
I’ve been an RG dues-paying member since 2016, when I first found RG as a member or volunteer. I originally joined because I was asked, and gave at the lowest level. Before joining RG, I’d never been a member of institutions that didn’t give me services or free merch. I was organized into joining RG in a way that means that I’m part of a collective voice, effort, movement. While my dues to RG increase as my overall redistribution also increases, I feel proud to put my money behind organizing work that has dramatically transformed me and how fully I’m able to show up for movements . - Katie W.
I joined RG to commit to an organization that had facilitated so much of my personal growth. Since then, I have learned what it means to be a part of something bigger than myself by being involved in a membership-based organization –it’s an important invitation to invest in something collective–in this case, an organization that truly should be funded by its members & not competing for funding with grassroots frontline orgs. Finally, as someone inviting others to join RG in chapter leadership, it’s important to lead by example. - Nicole F.
