Congress must finish its work

Indivisibles,

Democrats wildly overperformed in the midterm elections this year, fighting back extremism and blocking the predicted “Red Wave” of MAGA wins. This should be celebrated. We cannot overstate the incredible work done by Indivisibles this cycle.

But, there is still a good chance Republicans won enough congressional races to achieve a House majority. We are now stuck in an in-between scenario: We don’t quite know how our legislative branch is going to shake out, and we're running up against a potentially dwindling timeframe to achieve our progressive priorities as well as the policies necessary for basic governance (think: raising the debt ceiling).

In the event that Democrats lose their trifecta, we know that MAGA Republicans will not only refuse to cooperate to pass substantive legislation, but also actively obstruct basic legislative necessities in order to hurt Democrats and everyday people, such as slashing Social Security and Medicare.

To prevent that from happening, we need Democrats to keep Congress in session for the remainder of this calendar year to minimize the potential harm Republicans can inflict. If Congress stays in session, then they can:

  • Accomplish as much legislative clean-up as possible.
  • Prevent hostage-taking in the incoming Congress.

We must take advantage of the “final session” (the period of time between the election and the inauguration of the next Congress, previously referred to as “lame duck”) to achieve these goals.

If we convince Congress to stay in session seven days a week until their work is done, then we have the opportunity to achieve priorities such as: lifting the debt ceiling through reconciliation, passing viable bipartisan legislation like the Respect for Marriage Act, instituting reforms to the Electoral Count Act, confirming federal judges, and securing progressive wins.

But Congress will not do this on their own. We need your help to convince them to take this vital step:

We do not know the final outcome of the midterms and likely will not have a full picture for a few weeks. We cannot allow vital time to slip through our fingers while we wait, hoping for positive results.

Many of us feel some complex mix of exhaustion, pride, fear, joy, and anger at the state of our country -- there is no way to overstate the potential harm a MAGA House majority could mean for our country. Take your time to celebrate gains, mourn losses, and rest where you need it, but remember that we have less than two months left with a guaranteed trifecta. We need to take advantage of every moment we have.

In solidarity,
Indivisible Team
