Ending child poverty: A policy agenda

A new policy brief published by the Global Coalition to End Child Poverty outlines the urgent need for governments to:
- Make child poverty reduction an explicit national priority in national budgets, policies, and laws.
- Expand child-sensitive social protection, including universal child benefits.
- Improve access to quality public services, including access to quality health and education services.
- Promote decent work and inclusive growth agenda to reach families and children in poverty.
During the webinar to launch the policy brief, government representatives and experts from Bangladesh, Ghana, Kenya, Spain and USA emphasized how investing in children makes sense and the expansion of social protection during the pandemic proved that child poverty can be addressed with the right policies in place.

Many children joined to imagine a future without poverty

The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty was commemorated this year at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. The commemoration was filled with powerful messages, music, poetry, and symbolic gestures to stand in solidarity with people who are facing struggle and exclusion every day. Unpacking deprivation bundles to reduce multidimensional poverty

Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) launched the 2022 global Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) on 17 October 2022, highlighting the global and interlinked nature of poverty and steps to take toward poverty reduction. The global MPI is an internationally comparable measure of acute multidimensional poverty covering over 100 countries in developing regions. It complements traditional monetary poverty measures by capturing the acute deprivations in health, education, and living standards that poor people face simultaneously. Read more.

Generation Hope: 2.4 billion reasons to end the global climate and inequality crisis

Save the Children recently launched a global campaign by releasing a new report, Generation Hope: 2.4 billion reasons to end the global climate and inequality crisis. The report profiles insights from a global conversation with over 54,000 children from more than 40 countries on climate and inequality. From hearing their stories, it’s clear that this global crisis is having a profound impact on children’s lives, in both lower and higher-income countries. The executive summary of the report, as well as the child-friendly summary and region-specific briefs, are available on the Resource Centre in Arabic, English, French, and Spanish.

Child poverty across eastern Europe and Central Asia soars by 19 per cent, as the Ukraine war and rising inflation drive four million children into poverty

On 17 October, marking the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, the Office of Research and UNICEF Europe and Central Asia Regional Office released a new regional brief highlighting the impact of the war in Ukraine and rising inflation on child poverty. As a result of these crises, child poverty across eastern Europe and Central Asia is soared by 19 per cent since 2021. UNICEF warned that the ripple effects of the increase in child poverty could result in a steep rise in school dropouts and infant mortality. Read the regional brief and the global press release.

Dignity for all children at the center of actions

Together with members of Arigatou International’s Global Network of Religions for Children (GNRC), among several other partnering organizations, Arigatou International led commemorative community actions during IDEP 2022 and throughout October. The focus was on addressing poverty that affects children and spurring actions to overcome child poverty. These actions ranged from planting trees to having advocacy dialogue with government leaders, launching innovative social initiatives that address child poverty, to organizing education sessions with children. Launch of the OECD Observatory on Social Mobility and Equal Opportunity

Over the past 15 years, the OECD has collected a significant body of evidence on the extent and drivers of inequalities, social mobility, and equal opportunity, including policy responses on how to tackle these issues. This evidence has shown how reducing inequalities can be highly beneficial for society. To capitalize on these lessons and address existing information gaps, the OECD is launching an Observatory on Social Mobility and Equal Opportunity on 25 November 2022 with a virtual event. The Observatory will push forward the OECD’s work on these key topics, by collecting new data, discussing new policy options, and analyzing the role played by civil society and the private sector. Climate change and child rights in Africa: Impact and accountability

African Child Policy Forum has conducted its 9th International Policy Conference on the African Child (IPC) on Climate Change and Child Rights in Africa: Impact and Accountability in Addis Ababa on 6 - 7 September 2022. The forum provided an opportunity to deep dive into climate change as a disaster that is reversing progress made in children’s rights in Africa and situate African children within the climate crisis discourse. The conference is enriched by the exchange of views and experiences of practitioners, experts, policymakers, and others from across Africa and beyond.

Launch of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Academy for Children, Sri Lanka

Arigatou International in collaboration with the Sarvodaya Sharamadana Movement and other partners launched the SDGs Academy for Children in Sri Lanka, on 17 October 2022 marking the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. The Academy seeks to provide children with simplified and easy-to-use SDG learning tools, offering safe virtual and physical child-friendly spaces for interaction. The classes include a storytelling campaign for children on the SDGs, and multi-level gaming mobile applications and web apps that are relevant to children of age four and above.

Story Garden: Building knowledge and community through creativity

ATD Fourth World in New Mexico, USA, is celebrating the 10th anniversary of Story Garden in the Gallup Flea Market. This celebration included the viewing of a film featuring Story Garden participants from over the years, directed by a Diné (Navajo) filmmaker and Executive Director of Indigenous Lifeways. Learn how Story Garden has impacted thousands of people and children within the Southwest by emphasizing the power of creativity, learning, and having a sense of belonging where every person is valued.

World Day of Prayer and Action for Children

Arigatou International together with partners will commemorate the World Day of Prayer and Action for Children (DPAC) between 17 – 18 November, in Rome Italy as well as stream online (YouTube, Facebook, Zoom). This commemoration precedes the global World Children’s Day on 20 November. DPAC 2022 presents an opportunity to increase multi-stakeholder collaboration to advocate for every child’s dignity and holistic well-being, with a special focus on children on the move. The World Bank’s Poverty and Shared Prosperity 2022 edition provides the first comprehensive look at the landscape of poverty in the aftermath of an extraordinary series of shocks to the global economy. Global progress in reducing extreme poverty has virtually come to a halt. After COVID-19 dealt the biggest setback to global poverty in decades, rising food and energy prices—fueled by climate shocks and conflict among the world’s biggest food producers—have hindered a swift recovery. WeWorld Index 2022: Women and children breaking barriers to build the future

On 9 November, WeWorld and ChildFund Alliance presented the findings of the eighth edition of the WeWorld Index, a comprehensive report that monitors the living conditions of women and children around the world in nearly 170 countries. The 2022 edition delves into the overlapping effects of the crises characterizing today's world and how they affect the living conditions of women and children. While not exhaustive, the index identifies five key barriers that are great threats to children: poverty, conflicts, forced migration, climate change, and online risks. Finally, it explores how the effects of the key barriers intertwine with each other, creating a combination that could potentially compromise the future of an entire generation and of generations to come.

The economic costs of childhood socio-economic disadvantage

“The economic costs of childhood socio-economic disadvantage” paper will be released on 25 November. It will present an evaluation of the economic cost related to the penalty borne by socio-economically disadvantaged children comparing their labour market and health outcomes in adulthood with those of their more advantaged peers. On average across OECD European countries, the labour market penalties associated with childhood disadvantage are equivalent to 1.6 per cent of GDP each year, and the health penalties are 1.9 per cent of GDP. Adding in the tax and benefit penalties, an overall average cost from childhood disadvantage is 4.1 per cent of GDP, annually. The analysis shows that socio-economic disadvantages in childhood carry a cost for the economy that countries should consider when making the case for investing in children. Child-sensitive economic policies in Africa and child wellbeing 2023

African Child Policy Forum (ACPF) has finalized the preparations for a new report entitled: “Good Practices on Child-Sensitive Economic Policies in Africa.” This report explores good practices in child-sensitive economic policies in Africa. It identifies key dimensions of child-sensitive economic policy programming and design and examines the impact of existing policy practices and programmes on children.
ACPF has dedicated the theme of the 7th edition of its flagship report series “The African report on child wellbeing” to child poverty. The report intends to examine progress and have an in-depth look at the nature and magnitude of child poverty in Africa and the efforts to address it. The report is now under preparation and is tentatively scheduled to be launched in June 2023. The African Child Policy Forum is currently looking for resources for both publications and the launching of the reports. Get in touch with Addis Yimer for further information.
