John, today we honor the millions who served in our armed services.

During my service on the ground in the Iraq War and my deployments at sea, through the many tours and sacrifices of so many of my friends and classmates, I know deeply what we ask of those who wear the uniform and the families behind them. My generation of veterans (like so many before us) has borne an unconscionable burden through two decades of endless wars.

I promise each and every one of you this: In Congress, I will never vote to send young Americans (your children, as well as my own) to war unless absolutely critical to our national security, and I will never be afraid to ask the tough questions and to demand answers from those beating the drumbeat of war.

And to my fellow veterans, I will never break faith with you, to whom our government has a sacred obligation to care for through a fully funded and staffed VA. You deserve nothing less, and as your representative in Washington, I’ll fight like hell for us.
