John,

While we don’t yet know the final results of all of this year’s midterm
elections, there’s a few initial thoughts I wanted to share with you:

 1. Many of my Democratic colleagues held — and flipped — highly
competitive seats. Across the country, Democrats far outperformed most
expectations, marking this as the best midterm election in a
President’s first term in decades.
 2. Progressives won on Tuesday night, and we keep winning as more results
come in. Across the country, in city and state legislatures,
governorships, the House, AND the Senate, progressives overcame
millions in corporate spending and right-wing disinformation, many
making history along the way.
 3. Americans in blue and red states overwhelmingly upheld abortion rights
and rejected election deniers in offices overseeing elections. On
state ballots, abortion rights were codified, marijuana was legalized,
and “legal” slavery was abolished — marking significant gains at the
state level that will affect millions of people.

In a democracy, we cannot and will not win every race, but as we
prepare for the remaining results, I am feeling hopeful for our
country and our future. It’s clear to me that in many ways, the
American people rejected senseless extremism and showed support for
the historic agenda we have pursued these past two years.

Now looking ahead, we have a lot of work to do for the next two years
— and I hope you’ll be by my side while I continue to fight for you.
