With faith and hope and courage we hold our heads erect and with
dauntless spirit marshal the working class for the march from
Capitalism to Socialism, from Slavery to Freedom, from Barbarism to
Civilization.
--Eugene Debs
Comrades,
It's the dawn of a new decade. We believe the twenties will see
democratic socialism ascendant in the United States. In fact, before
the first year of the decade is even over, we have a chance to put a
democratic socialist candidate in the White House — an auspicious
beginning.
A Bernie Sanders victory is well within reach
(https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/polls/president-primary-d/california/)
in California. And not only does California send the most delegates of
any state to the Democratic Party convention, but our primary has also
been moved up, giving us outsize impact on the primary. If Bernie wins
California, he has a path to the nomination, and from there to triumph
over Donald Trump
(https://jacobinmag.com/2019/12/bernie-sanders-vs-donald-trump) .
Whether Bernie wins California relies on us. That's why East Bay
DSA is starting the year off with a New Year's Revolution, five
straight days of DSA for Bernie events the first week of January.
We're kicking off this string of events tonight, and we've got events
every day for the duration of the week. See below to find a social,
canvass, party, or barnstorm that fits your schedule and come out!
The California primary is in eight weeks. Mail-in ballots drop in
four weeks. There's no time to waste. Join our New Year's Revolution
today!

** SOCIALIST NIGHT SCHOOL: BERNIE 2020, CAPITALISM &
DEMOCRATIC
SOCIALISM
------------------------------------------------------------
Tuesday,
January 7 | 7–9 p.m.
East Bay Community Space, 507 55th St, Oakland
♿
"If there is going to be class warfare in this country, it’s
about time the working class won that war."
So says Bernie Sanders, the self-described democratic socialist who
has a real shot at becoming president of the United States. The
Democratic Socialists of America has thrown its weight behind Bernie’s
campaign, which has inspired millions of working-class people to get
involved in politics and to fight for a better world.
This special edition of East Bay DSA’s Socialist Night School will
tackle some fundamental questions about democratic socialism and the
Bernie movement. What is class warfare, and how is it related to
capitalism? What do we mean by “capitalism” and “democratic
socialism,” anyway? And how does the campaign for Bernie advance the
cause of democratic socialism?
Join us on Tuesday, January 7 to discuss these questions, in the
first of a special four-part series on Bernie Sanders, capitalism, and
democratic socialism.
The venue and restrooms are wheelchair-accessible.

DSA ATU SOLIDARITY UPDATE
In September, the AC Transit bus
operators and mechanics of Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 192
voted to authorize a strike, and East Bay DSA created a strike
solidarity working group. By November 16, we co-sponsored a successful
pilot with ATU 192, in which about 200 union, DSA and community
members rallied in East Oakland and then canvassed several Oakland
business districts, talking to the community about the strike and
putting up posters declaring that AC Transit’s "workers and riders
roll together." We then co-led a training for about 2 dozen ATU
canvass captains who are now preparing to lead distributed canvasses
up and down the East Bay.
A report summarizing the background and East Bay DSA's role to date
is here
(https://www.eastbaydsa.org/news/2019/12/9/dsa-atu-192-pre-strike-support-campaign/)
. And let us know if you’d be interested in canvassing with our ATU
192 brothers and sisters by filling out the Google form linked below.
A strike could come as early as February.
