John,
I ' m writing to you today with great news!
Since Tuesday night, so far, three Iranian-American women won their races and made history. Their wins mean increased Iranian-American representation in state legislatures and local governments across the country - meaning we’re increasing our community's representation at all levels of government nationwide. These elected officials will continue to break down barriers in their respective offices and we’re thrilled to watch them help their communities flourish.
First-time candidate and Iranian-American woman Darya Farivar just won her election for Washington State legislature. Farivar has an extensive history of public service – she works of the director of public policy at Disability Rights Washington, serves as the co-chair of the Seattle Women’s Commission, is the policy chair on the State’s Special Education Advisory Council, and is a board member of Peyvand, an organization supporting Iranian students at the University of Washington. Farivar is the first Middle Eastern woman to ever serve in the Washington State legislature. Congrats, Darya!
Farrach Chaichi made history as the first Iranian-American woman to be elected to the Oregon State Legislature , winning her race for Oregon State House, District 35. Chaichi is a lifelong resident of Beaverton, an attorney and a champion for human and civil rights. She was appointed to the Beaverton Human Rights Advisory Commission and has led a campaign centered on justice, equality, compassion and solidarity.
We’re also proud of Sara Aminzadeh , who ran a high-powered and inspirational campaign for California State Assembly and was only very narrowly defeated. She lifted up some of the most pressing issues in our communities, like addressing the climate crisis, and mobilized an impressive coalition of allies over many months. We congratulate Sara, and all endorsees who didn't get the results they had hoped for, on finding the courage to run and make a difference in their community. We're excited to see what they do next.
Iranian-American women candidates also wrote and signed a powerful letter amplifying the community’s demands for solidarity with the Iranian protestors. You can add your name to this community-organized letter here. [[link removed]] IA women candidates and electeds are using their political power to mobilize the community for action, and to use their representation for good.
On a national level, at least five and counting of our Congressional endorsees won their races. They’re listed below:

Pramila
Jayapal
(WA-07)
*
Rep.
Ro
Khanna
(CA-17)

Rep.

(MI-13)
*
Rep.
Ilhan

(MN-05)
*
Rep.

(MA-06)
Overall, we saw our congressional endorsees win races in at least five states, spanning all over the U.S. With allies like them in Congress, NIAC Action will be able to continue building political power to further our mission to advance peace, prevent war and inhumane sanctions, secure equitable immigration policies, and protect civil and human rights — including women’s rights. Notably, nearly 70% of NIAC Action-endorsed candidates this year were women.
I want to sincerely thank you for your continued support. Through your contributions and dedication, our endorsed candidates made history and will inspire more Iranian Americans to run for office. History is made little by little, and we’re honored to have you helping us along the way.
We’re so proud of all of our endorsees, and we look forward to seeing the great work they accomplish in office.
In solidarity,
Mitra Jalali
Senior Political Advisor, NIAC Action
