Dear friend,

New York's utilities are still in negotiations with regulators to deal with the ever-present utility debt crisis. As of September 2022, nearly 1.2 million New York households are still in debt to their utility company, with an average household debt of a whopping $1,125.

We need to send a message to the PSC loud and clear - ratepayers cannot and should not be responsible for covering the entire cost of the debt.

The Department of Public Service, the utilities, including PSEG-LI, and advocates from across the state are considering a number of proposals to eliminate the debt. However, there is significant concern that all ratepayers will be forced to shoulder most of the cost in the form of a surcharge.
We need to tell the Commission and utilities loud and clear: utility shareholders must share some of the pain. The PSC must consider this: not a single major utility in New York decreased the profits given to their common stockholders in 2020. It would be highly unjust to not have a significant contribution from utility shareholders who have been receiving record profits throughout the pandemic.
