Dear Friend,
As results from yesterday's election continue to come in and votes continue to be counted in battleground races — and with control of Congress still in the balance — I'm writing to say THANK YOU.
With the commitment of dedicated supporters like you, LCV Victory Fund and our affiliated entities did everything in our power to motivate and turn out voters to protect and elect climate and democracy champions in 2022. In doing so, we made the difference in close races and overcame polluter money and stiff political headwinds to help many of our champions WIN.
While the outcomes of some key races are yet to be decided, it is already clear that pro-climate, pro-democracy voters showed up, and there was no nationwide "red wave." Pro-environment leadership in the U.S. Senate is favored to hold onto that control, and pro-climate, pro-democracy U.S. House candidates defied expectations. Moreover, there was a "green wave" in critical governors and state legislative races across the country.
These wins didn't happen by accident. We worked hard to achieve these results, investing strategically where we knew we could deliver decisive margins.
GOVERNORS LEAD GREEN WAVE IN STATES
Going into this election cycle, gubernatorial races were a priority for LCV Victory Fund's state affiliates. In total, our state affiliates invested $19.5 million to engage and turn out voters to support pro-environment, pro-democracy governors in critical races, and many of these candidates have already won:
Critically, these governors will be at the helm of ensuring that the federal investments in the Inflation Reduction Act are implemented equitably to benefit communities hardest hit by pollution and environmental injustice. Additionally, these governors will play a vital role in protecting our democracy and safeguarding voting rights through 2026.
Our state affiliates helped win other critical state and local races as well, including establishing two new pro-climate majorities in state legislatures in Michigan and Minnesota. Both states will now have pro-environment, pro-democracy trifectas — governor, state senate, and state house — beginning in 2023. (And thanks to gubernatorial wins in Maryland and Massachusetts, two additional pro-climate, pro-democracy state trifectas were newly established.)
PROTECTING & ELECTING U.S. SENATE & HOUSE CHAMPIONS
At the federal level, LCV Victory Fund and partners worked to turn out millions of climate voters in key states to support pro-environment U.S. Senate and House candidates. We overcame the historically unfavorable midterm trends and a daunting economy to deliver winning margins in many tough races by messaging on the economic and environmental benefits of the climate provisions in the Inflation Reduction Act.
Many races are still too close to call, but our wins so far include:
- Helping to flip Pennsylvania's open Senate seat from anti-environment to pro-environment by electing John Fetterman
- Defending pro-climate Senators Maggie Hassan in New Hampshire and Michael Bennet in Colorado
- Defeating at least five Dirty Dozen candidates
- Electing at least 22 new climate and democracy champions to the House
- Protecting at least 69 House champions who supported the Inflation Reduction Act, helping them hold onto their seats, despite gerrymandering and attacks by fossil fuel interests.
That this was such a difficult election year only makes these wins more significant.
Regardless of the final electoral results in Congress, LCV's core strategies to protect our climate and democracy will remain intact through 2024, thanks to your support.
In the weeks ahead, we will continue to update you on the outcomes of this election and share more about the specific impact your investments had across the country. We will also update you on how LCV and our state affiliates plan to advance and defend pro-environment, pro-democracy policies in 2023 and beyond.
In the meantime, thank you for everything you did to help win critical races this year. You made these results possible.
Onward,
Gene Karpinski
