While votes are still being counted, there are many things to celebrate about the outcome of last night’s midterm elections.
One thing we know for sure is that the “red wave” that was so highly anticipated on Tuesday night did not happen. In races across the country, voters rejected some of the most authoritarian, far-right candidates and policies on the ballot. Meanwhile, voters supported abortion rights in all five states where reproductive freedom was on the ballot and New York voters passed a measure securing $4.2 billion in climate spending.1
But with control of the House and Senate still up in the air – it's more clear than ever before that if we are going to turn things around for our climate, the United States must build on our climate progress by bringing the bold climate action we need to the global arena.
President Biden is heading to the UN Climate Conference (COP27) very soon. The single biggest item on the agenda for the United States will be whether we financially support loss and damages for nations impacted by climate chaos.
This is the first time loss and damages has made it to the agenda at a UN Climate Conference, John. Now is our moment to make sure Biden hears the message from our climate movement loud and clear: As one of the biggest polluters globally, the U.S. must pay its fair share for loss and damages from climate disasters.
Here's exactly what I mean when I say loss and damages:
For decades, we’ve known that the richest nations of the world generate the most pollution. But when it comes to the effects of climate disaster, countries in the global south are taking the brunt of the damage.
Now, these affected countries are calling for justice in the form of compensation from big carbon emitters to help recover from losses due to the climate crisis and support long-term climate resiliency.2 While high-emitting countries have tried to derail the conversation for years, thanks to the activism of low-emitting nations, loss and damages has finally made it onto the COP agenda.
