Dear John,
It’s safe to say that 2020 will be a defining moment for the Jewish people.
Over the past 18 months, antisemites have carried out violent and even deadly attacks on Jews across the country—in Pittsburgh, Poway, Jersey City, Monsey, and Brooklyn.
AJC’s recent landmark survey on antisemitism found that nearly one in three American Jews conceal their Jewish identity out of concern for their safety. One out of three.
We face a choice. We can either allow this to become the new normal or we can stand up and say Hineni—here I am!
At AJC, we choose to stand up, and we invite you to join us.
Join us in taking an important first step by participating in AJC’s #JewishandProud Day on Monday, January 6.
Here’s how you can take part in this worldwide affirmation of Jewish pride:
- Wear your Judaism with pride: Whether you have a kippah, a necklace with a Jewish symbol, a t-shirt written in Hebrew, or anything else identifiably Jewish, wear your Jewishness publicly and proudly, in the United States or abroad, in cities big and small. Post a photo of yourself displaying your Jewish pride on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram using the hashtag #JewishandProud and add the #JewishandProud frame to your Facebook profile picture. If you like, include a sentence explaining why you are proud to be Jewish.
- Hold up your #JewishandProud sign: Even if you don’t have something identifiably Jewish to wear, print our #JewishandProud sign or make your own image featuring the #JewishandProud slogan and post a photo of yourself with the image and hashtag on social media. This is an opportunity to celebrate our Jewishness, and creativity is encouraged. Take your photo in front of an iconic landmark in your city. Make a sign and take a photo from wherever you might be on vacation. Take a multigenerational family photo.
- Let us know you are participating! Sign up for our #JewishandProud day at AJC.org/JewishandProud. We will highlight some of the most creative and powerful posts on AJC’s social media accounts.
- Not Jewish? Feel free to use the hashtag or submit a message at AJC.org/JewishandProud and share what you will be doing in 2020 to support the Jewish community.
With your efforts on #JewishandProud Day, and throughout the year, we will beat back the hatred and the fear and make the world a safer place for Jews.
Best wishes for a happy, healthy, and safe new year!
Sincerely,
Daniel Elbaum
