We’re so proud to see a number of our women elected in crucial seats, particularly in down ballot races. Despite the fact that Republicans now hold a supermajority in the state House and Senate, we were victorious in some key races, including:
-
Lindsay Cross waged a successful hard-fought campaign to keep State House District 60 in Democratic hands;
- Autumn Garick flipped a seat on the Seminole County School Board; and
- Marleine Bastien made history as the first Haitian woman ever elected to the Miami-Dade County Commission and the first woman to represent District 2.
We’ve always known it was going to take significant investment to change the political landscape in Florida, and as we saw last night, that starts at the most local levels of government. It’s why Ruth’s List was founded, and why we won’t stop when it comes to recruiting first-time candidates and supporting Democratic pro-choice women with early resources to run competitive campaigns.
Friend, our work is far from over. In fact, it’s just beginning.
With a supermajority in the legislature, the Florida GOP will be coming for our rights and freedoms. That’s not the future we want or deserve.
It’s why our work to build the bench starts today. Ruth’s List will never stop working towards our mission of electing Democratic pro-choice women at all levels of state and local government in Florida.
I want to personally thank you for your support and for continuing to fight with us for the future of our state.
Onward,
