Last night, the American people sent a thunderous message that we are sick and tired of the right-wing assault on our rights, our freedom, and our democracy.
Despite the right-wing Supreme Court justices stacking the deck for conservatives, their overreach on abortion fueled an electoral backlash in both red and blue states alike. Abortion access was directly on the ballot in five states last night, and in every single one of them, Americans turned out to reject the right-wing attack on abortion rights that the Court has spearheaded.
We stand with our allies on the ground making sure that election officials count every vote. There are still a few consequential races that are too close to call,
but the results last night emphatically defied expectations, elite conventional wisdom, and nearly a hundred years of political history in this election. Yet the threat of this Court still looms over our democracy.
There’s going to be a lot of coverage over the coming days and weeks ascribing the results of this election to everything under the sun. And I’m not going to tell you that I have all of the answers. But
there is one thing I know for sure: The final outcome will be due in no small part to this stolen and illegitimate Supreme Court’s assault on our fundamental right to vote.
Over the last decade, the Court has dismantled the Voting Rights Act, greenlit partisan gerrymandering, and even allowed Alabama and Louisiana to use racist voting maps
in this election. Indeed,
if Republicans ultimately take control of at least one chamber of Congress, it will be because the right-wing majority on the Supreme Court handed it to them.
If we want to truly protect our rights and repair our democracy in a real, lasting way, we have to expand the Court. While a lot is still unclear,
I am feeling hopeful because the American people showed up during this election to send a message: We’re not going to surrender our rights. This is why we fight.
