COVID-19 & Incarceration
The COVID-19 pandemic took a heightened toll on people incarcerated in prisons in the United States, but there's been a limited understanding of how COVID-19 outcomes differed among
incarcerated populations.
In a new article that was published this week, Neal Marquez and coauthors investigate racial and ethnic disparities in COVID-19 deaths in Texas state prison facilities.
They determine that during the first year of the pandemic, COVID-19 mortality rates for Black and Hispanic people in Texas prisons were 1.61 and 2.12 times higher, respectively, than for White people.
The authors examine some of the potential reasons behind the inequities they observed and recommend that COVID-19 mitigation strategies in carceral settings include equity components.
Elevating Voices - National American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage
Month: In the May 2022 issue, Steven C. Martino and co-authors discuss why American Indians and Alaskan Natives who are Medicare Advantage enrollees experience differences in care versus White beneficiaries.
