People For supporter,
As we continue monitoring yesterday’s midterm election returns, one thing
is clear: Democratic, independent, and young voters showed up in a BIG
way.
While some key races are yet to be called, and despite some setbacks,
voters across the country continue to reject Trumpism and MAGA Republicans
in droves. Driven by several issues including abortion, inflation, and the
ongoing threats to our democracy, voters turned out in record numbers to
fight back against extremist Republican agendas and their attempts to
erode decades of hard-won progress.
These are victories to be shared by all of us. Your continued support and
advocacy have resulted in the defeat of what was predicted to be a “red
wave” by pundits and polls. Although it could be days or even weeks before
we know the outcome of some key races – including an impending runoff
election in Georgia in the battle between Senator Raphael Warnock and
Herschel Walker that might determine control of the Senate – People For is
watching and assessing all possible scenarios and how they might impact
the trajectory of our progressive agenda in the months and years ahead.
[ [link removed] ]We hope you’ll join us on Wednesday, November 30 at 7:00 PM ET (4:00 PM
PT) for a briefing where we’ll discuss the election results and the fights
ahead in Congress, in the courts, and at the state level – RSVP now! >>
Please take a moment to reflect and celebrate some of the victories from
yesterday:
* Voters in states like Michigan, Kentucky, Vermont, Montana, and
California passed measures that support or reaffirm reproductive
freedom, including abortion protections.
* Battleground states like Pennsylvania, Michigan, Minnesota, (and
possibly Wisconsin, Arizona, and Nevada) rejected election-denying
candidates who would have upheld Trump’s Big Lie and potentially
jeopardized the 2024 election in those states.
* Voters in Michigan and Connecticut expanded access to voting by
overwhelming passing pro-democracy ballot measures.
* Several Democratic incumbents in close races once thought to be
flippable won their reelection.
* Minnesota and Michigan are poised to have a Democratic trifecta with
full control of the Governor’s office and both legislative bodies.
* Maryland elected its first Black governor.
* Massachusetts elected its first woman and out lesbian as governor and
Vermont sent its first woman and LGBTQ person to the House.
With many races yet to be called, we hope to be able to celebrate even
more victories in the days ahead, but we must remain vigilant and patient
as we allow our democratic process to play out and ensure that every last
vote is counted.
Thanks as always for all that you do and your continued support.
Ben Jealous, President
