All,
Marylanders voted to build a better Maryland – for everyone.
Late last night, I received a gracious phone call from County Executive Glassman conceding the race of Comptroller and our race has been called! After a two-year journey around Maryland, I am so proud, so humbled, and so incredibly excited to let you know that we have broken a glass ceiling and I will be Maryland’s 34th Comptroller!
Two years ago, I envisioned running a truly grassroots campaign that would meet people where they are – from Western Maryland to the Eastern Shore and everywhere in between – and talk with parents, business owners, educators, and all Marylanders about how the Comptroller’s office can help create more equitable, more prosperous communities in all corners of the state.
Together, we built that campaign. And it would not have been possible without you. You opened your homes, hopped on zoom calls, donated, knocked on doors, and made calls. Although it is my name on the ballot, this victory is about all of us.
I am so grateful to the thousands of Marylanders who gave their time and energy to this effort. I am also so thankful to those of you who funded this grassroots-led effort. And I’m grateful to the community leaders, elected leaders, unions, environmental groups, women’s groups, and immigrant groups who supported me in this effort. I have never felt more humble or proud than I have been in the past week, witnessing our coalition partners and volunteers work and vote.
Together, we can and will reimagine how the Comptroller’s office can support families, strengthen public schools, empower small businesses, and build a better Maryland for all. We will work with our new Governor, Wes Moore, with our new Attorney General, Anthony Brown, and with partners across the state to build a Maryland that works for all of us. Because I know we all do better when we all do better.
I am grateful to our volunteers who poured their energy and love into this campaign. I am grateful to my family — my parents and brothers and their families, and my own husband and two children — for supporting this effort and believing in me. And I am so grateful to our entire campaign team.
Over the past two years, thousands of people engaged in the political process, whether knocking on doors, making calls, or attending late-night Zoom meetings – all for a Comptroller’s race. You and all Marylanders inspire me each and every day.
To all the women and girls out there who put a part of themselves into this campaign, I see you and felt that support over and over again. We broke a big glass ceiling tonight. We showed thousands across our state and country what is possible if you believe in building coalitions to accomplish big things to make the world a better place for everyone.
The work is now beginning and I look forward to engaging with you all to keep working to build a better Maryland.
With a full heart and my very best,
Brooke Lierman
