John,
Republican politicians have long been hostile to Social Security, but they used to be a lot better at hiding it. This is the year the mask came off.
Republicans displayed a striking contempt for American democracy and American voters when they nominated a series of extremist, anti-democracy candidates who spent their campaigns talking about cutting, privatizing, or ultimately destroying Social Security. Last night, voters showed them the door.
While we don’t know who will win control of the House and Senate―which were narrowly divided going into the election―one thing is clear: The anti-Social Security party had one of the worst-ever midterm performances by a party that doesn’t control the White House.
Democratic champions of protecting and expanding Social Security, including Senator-Elect John Fetterman, Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D-OH), Rep. Susan Wild (D-PA), and Rep. Matt Cartwright (D-PA), won hotly contested races. Social Security Works PAC raised over $100,000 directly to candidates who would fight for Social Security and Medicare, and our president Jon “Bowzer” Bauman held over 50 events.
The voters sent a clear message last night: Social Security remains the third rail of American politics. Republicans just got shocked. Donate to Social Security Works today to demand that we EXPAND Social Security & Medicare, never cut them.
The next fight has already started. House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy promised that if Republicans make him Speaker of the House, he will use the debt ceiling as leverage to force cuts to Social Security and Medicare. Whether or not Republicans take control of the House, Democrats need to protect Social Security and Medicare by raising or eliminating the debt ceiling during the final session of the current Congress.
Democrats, including President Joe Biden, focused heavily on Social Security during the campaign. They made sure voters knew about Republican threats to the program, and promised that Democrats would protect Social Security. Now, it’s time for Democrats to keep that promise by raising or eliminating the debt ceiling.
Pitch in to our campaign to save Social Security from Republican hostage-takers today!
Thank you,
Alex Lawson Social Security Works
