Americans United for Life congratulates the numerous pro-life candidates who achieved victory at the ballot box in this year’s midterm elections. Senate leaders like Sen. Marco Rubio and newly-minted Sen. J.D. Vance are powerful voices for the human right to life. And in the states, Gov. Ron DeSantis, Gov. Greg Abott, and Gov. Kevin Stitt are only a few of the many pro-life leaders who we count on to protect life.
Tragically, important pro-life ballot measures failed in Kentucky and Montana, and pro-abortion measures prevailed in Michigan and were enshrined overwhelmingly in California and Vermont. These are sobering results. Abortion activists, by some estimates, spent $500 million or more on pro-abortion advertising this election cycle. We have long known that pro-life advocates are oftentimes outspent ten to one or worse by pro-abortion activists. And while money alone does not explain, let alone justify, democratic measures that would purport to make lawful lethal violence against the preborn, the awareness and influence that financial resources make possible will continue to shape elections and ballot measures.
