It’s a beautiful day here in the First District. To me, Election Day is always beautiful, because it is a celebration of our democracy.
In America, it doesn’t matter who you are, where you’re from, what your background is. If you have the best ideas and make the best case, you can represent your fellow citizens – in City Hall and the State House, as I’ve done in the past, or in Congress, where I hope to have that privilege starting next year.
For almost two years now, I’ve been making my best case for bringing decency, dignity, and effective leadership back to Maryland’s First Congressional District. And you have been with me every step of the way. I am so grateful for that.
Today, at the end of our journey together, I have nothing more to ask you except this: All the work that we have done in this campaign will have meant little unless it translates into a massive turnout at the ballot box.
If you live in the First District and have already voted: Thank you! If you haven’t had the chance yet, please don’t put it off a moment longer. We all know that life has a way of interfering with our best-laid plans. Today, of all days, don’t let that happen. And if you’re one of our amazing out-of-district supporters who can’t vote for me, give your First District friends one last nudge of encouragement – then get out there and elect the candidates in your area who most inspire you.
It’s a beautiful day all right, made more splendid by our good fortune to live in the greatest country in the world, with a political system that people everywhere admire and envy. Let’s not take it for granted. We’ll have it only as long as we can keep it, and the way we keep it is by staying engaged in the system – and not just on Election Day.
