The How and Why in One Day
Dear John,
October 21, 2022 demonstrates why we are in the Upper Gulf of California and how we protect the Vaquita. Check out this quick video that breaks down one day in our ninth year of Operation Milagro, which is our partnership with the Mexican Navy.
Two years ago, Sea Shepherd kicked off Operation Milagro VII and found over 100 illegal fishing boats in the Zero Tolerance Area of the Vaquita Refuge, which is the very activity that can kill the remaining Vaquita. In September of 2022, we kicked off Milagro IX earlier than any previous year and our surveillance indicates dramatically reduced incidences of illegal fishing activity. That reduction is due to Sea Shepherd’s work in partnership with the Mexican government and particularly the cooperation and leadership of the Mexican Navy. This partnership has evolved, expanded, and scaled to the point where we can prevent the use of illegal fishing gear that threatens the Vaquita with extinction. Click HERE for an hour-by-hour snapshot of Friday October 21st and see how we protect the Vaquita Refuge against poachers and the cartels that send them out to fish illegally in the UNESCO recognized Vaquita Refuge.

Seahorse Sets Sail
Fresh from dry-dock in Louisiana, the Seahorse is ready to set sail and will soon be on its way to Operation Milagro. We completed the purchase of Seahorse in August and with its updates completed its time to head out to conduct Direct Action on behalf of endangered species in our oceans. Check out this fun video HERE of the finishing touches we applied after re-fitting the offshore support vessel for Sea Shepherd campaigns. Upgrades included a modernized electrical system, sanitization of the water filtration system, bolstering the navigation system, and new communications gear, specifically a new satellite system for strong data and communications transmittal. Over the next five weeks, the Seahorse will head down the Mississippi River, through the Panama Canal, and enter the Vaquita Refuge to help us protect the most endangered marine mammal in the world. Safe travels, Seahorse and welcome to the Sea Shepherd fleet!
