On this day 2 decades ago, human trafficking hadn’t even been defined as a crime. Since then, because of the momentum of this movement

It’s a new decade.

I’m sometimes asked, “We’ve been fighting child trafficking for a long time. Do you think we’re making an impact?”

On this day 2 decades ago, human trafficking had yet to be defined as a crime by the United Nations & United States. Because of the momentum of this movement, that changed. On this day 1 decade ago, people like Jeffrey Epstein, R. Kelly, and many others were exploiting victims with impunity. Because of the momentum of this movement, that changed. And because of you, I believe a decade from now things will be very different. If you have already given recently, thank you for your support. If you haven't, please consider giving to our year-end campaign – it’s not over!

Last year, we received more referrals for trafficked youth than ever before. And my gut says that 2020, we’ll probably top that. But this is not cause for despair. Rather, our society and systems are seeing the problem where we didn’t see it before. We’re responding to the needs of children and coming together to make this a safer world for them.

This isn’t a sprint, it’s a marathon. We won’t end child trafficking in the next decade. But hear me: we are winning. Pace yourself and don’t get tired. Keep listening to survivors. Keep raising a collective shout about this atrocity. Because your heart, your attention, and your voice matters – and together our refusal to fail children is why this will end.

Happy new year!

PS: Today is the first day of National Human Trafficking Prevention Month. At Love146, as the years go by, we continue to listen and deepen our understanding of the issue. So over the coming month, you’ll be getting messages sharing some basic facts and stats about the problem – because we can all use a good foundation.

Founded in 2002, Love146 is an international human rights organization working to end the trafficking and exploitation of children through survivor care and prevention. Our programs in the US, the UK, the Philippines, and parts of Africa have reached over 55,000 children. The trafficking and exploitation of children is one of the darkest stories and most severe human rights abuses imaginable. Your donation will give children in our care a fighting chance. Thank you for believing in what lies ahead of children, no matter what lies behind them.
