Dear John,

Unless you used a different email, it doesn't look like you registered for the 2022 APHA Annual Meeting and Expo, but we still want to keep you in the loop and share some resources and excitement from the meeting as we celebrate APHA's 150th anniversary and chart our course for the future of public health.

Featured Sessions

COVID-19 The Great Pandemic: What's Next?
8:30-10:00 a.m. | BCEC - West Ballroom

Join a panel of experts who will discuss the status of the COVID-19 pandemic, its continuing effects on society and how we can prepare for future pandemics. Panelists will also review preexisting public health challenges that the pandemic highlighted.

Fund Health Care Not Warfare
10:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m. | BCEC - West Ballroom

Military spending accounts for more than 10 percent of all federal spending and nearly half of discretionary spending, yet from 2008 through 2018, state governmental public health spending saw no growth, except in injury prevention. This session will address redirecting excessive U.S. military expenditures to adequately fund public health, create equitable health care with single-payer "improved Medicare for all" and ensure the availability of health workers to meet these needs.

Youth Suicide and Guns: an American Epidemic
2:30-4:00 p.m. | BCEC - 103

The United States has a current epidemic of firearm suicide among children and youth. Youth suicide has increased every year since 2007. From 2019 to 2020, the rate of firearm suicides among youth ages 10-24 increased by 15% in one year alone and is now at its highest rate ever. This session addresses the urgent youth mental health and suicide crisis from a public health perspective on gun violence prevention.

AJPH Session: Weathering the Storm: Countering Backlash Against Public Health
2:30-4:00 p.m. | BCEC – West Ballroom

Public health professionals within and outside government are currently facing a powerful and wide-ranging backlash. Panel speakers will address the historical and contemporary roots of this anti-public health backlash, how forces such as political polarization propel it and why anti-public health messages resonate with much of the public.

Annual Meeting COVID-19 Safety Policy
APHA is requiring all in-person attendees to be up to date with their COVID-19 vaccination against the SARS-Cov-2 virus as defined by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control & Prevention. Up to date is defined as a completed full primary series (two shots of the Pfizer and Moderna COVID vaccine or one shot of the Johnson and Johnson product; or a comparably approved vaccine if you are an international attendee) plus at least one booster.

We encourage people who are eligible for the new COVID-19 bivalent booster to receive it and their flu vaccination at least two weeks before the meeting.

You will be required to show proof of vaccination during event check-in. By registering for the event, you agree to be fully vaccinated against the COVID-19 virus by Oct. 20, 2022.

Also, all APHA 2022 in-person attendees, exhibitors, speakers, staff and volunteers will be required to wear masks at indoor activities.
