Snow-capped mountains of Santa Marta, Colombia

John,

There’s an incredible place in Colombia where you can find snow-capped mountains, prehistoric rainforests, and crystal clear rivers that run right into the Caribbean Sea! And this week we can help buy and protect it...forever.

The Indigenous communities of Sierra Nevada de Santa Maria have lived on this land for centuries, but it’s now under critical threat from mining, tourism, and urbanization.

Our partner, Rainforest Trust, is working hand-in-hand with them to have their Indigenous-owned land added to a National Park, giving it the highest protection possible under Colombian law. But to do it the government says they also need to buy more than a thousand acres of adjoining forest -- and for that, they need our help!

Last year we helped buy and protect a critical ecosystem in Indonesia…now we can do it in Colombia.

If 5000 of us chip in the cost of a cup of coffee in the next 24 hours, Rainforest Trust has donors offering a 2x match on your donation! They could secure the land quickly and get started on their work protecting the forest. Can you help save this unique piece of our planet?

The Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta is truly a one-of-a-kind ecosystem, the highest tropical mountain range in the world. For centuries, Indigenous People have inhabited the area and safeguarded a refuge for hundreds of threatened species like the Brown Spider Monkey and the White-fronted Capuchin.

The land is already protected as ancestral territory – but under Colombian law this does nothing to prevent mining. Now that threat is coming up fast, along with increased pressure from new urban settlements, tourism, and coal ports. Santa Marta’s incredible biodiversity and communities are at risk.

Working with a local Indigenous-led organization, Resguardo Kogui Malayo Arhuaco, Rainforest Trust will secure National Park status for almost 500,000 acres of land – the highest environmental protection possible in Colombia law – while maintaining Indigenous ownership. Then they’ll ensure the land is patrolled and supervised, working together with Colombian authorities and the Kogui, Malayo, and Arhuaco Peoples.

This is a rare and incredible opportunity. To work with others around the world – and with Indigenous land-holders – to buy land and then help protect a critical and unique ecosystem.

Will you be one of the 5000 donors we need in the next 24 hours? Every extra penny we raise will be used to defend wild places like this from corporations bent on their destruction.
