Hello,

This week's edition looks at how you choose your interests. Dr. Jean Twenge and I discuss the often volatile and unhealthy world of the internet. Also, from the archives, how to embrace your dark side to overcome it.

** Do You Choose Your Interests?
------------------------------------------------------------

“You don't choose your interests, they choose you.” That's really worth thinking about.

You know, it's really hard to get interested in something you're not interested in. Even if you know there's a good reason for it.

You're studying for an exam, you find the material boring. Anything will be more interesting than studying, even though you know that that's what you need to do.

You can't voluntarily grab yourself by the scruff of the neck, let's say, and shake yourself and say, “Sit down and concentrate.” Your mind will just go everywhere.

But then if you're interested in something—even if it's something you shouldn't be interested in—because that happens all the time, then it's like you’re laser-focused.

You can pay attention forever. You can work until you're exhausted, you won't even notice it and you remember everything. It's like okay, if you can't control your interest, what does?

You are not mature until someone else matters more than you. Period.

You are not supposed to stay a child. You're supposed to become one. That's a whole different thing.

And you achieve that in the spirit of play within the confines of your marriage.

The conclusory episode to my new 3-part series Jordan B Peterson On Marriage ([link removed]) will be available this Thursday, November 10th, 2022 exclusively on DailyWire+ ([link removed]) .

I will discuss why marriage is the highest form of play, and how career, children, and marriage can and should work together.

Additionally, I have been traveling the world for my new lecture series, Beyond Order: 12 More Rules for Life ([link removed]) . You can watch the first installment from my recent visit to Anaheim, California now, also on DailyWire+.

"People often won't specify their goals because they don't like to specify conditions for failure. So you keep yourself all vague and foggy, which is really easy because that's just a matter of not doing. Then you don't know when you have failed." ( ([link removed]) Share this on Twitter

How to Embrace Your Dark Side and Overcome It | Jordan B. Peterson

Dr. Peterson:
"Well, part of the reason that people go to watch anti-heroes and villains is that there is a part of them crying out for the incorporation of the monster within them. It gives them the strength of character and self-respect because it's impossible to respect yourself until you grow teeth, and if you grow teeth, you realize that you're somewhat dangerous."
