The worst spending bill in a decade.
The Senate is expected to pass a massive spending bill that would raise spending caps by $322 billion over the next two years. On top of the new spending, the deal suspends the debt limit for the next two years, piling on as much as $2 trillion more in debt. “Americans should not be celebrating the spending deal agreed to by congressional leaders and President Donald Trump. They should be appalled and insist Washington stop spending money we do not have,” writes David Ditch, a research associate in Heritage’s Grover M. Hermann Center for the Federal Budget. Heritage is helping to move forward a U.S.-U.K. free trade agreement.
Last week, Boris Johnson took on the role of prime minister of the United Kingdom in the wake of his predecessor Theresa May’s departure from office. As prime minister, Johnson may be able to make the final push for Brexit for the U.K., which would allow the country to pursue negotiations for a free trade agreement with the United States. In September 2018, Heritage worked with a coalition of think tanks to publish a free trade agreement between the U.S. and U.K. Learn more about the impact Heritage is having on U.S.-U.K. policy and Brexit.

New report on Green New Deal is making headlines.
New research from Heritage has found that the Green New Deal’s goal of drastically reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 is practically impossible. Additionally, the new report found that under the most modest estimates, just one part of this new deal would cost an average family $165,000 and wipe out 5.2 million jobs with negligible climate benefit. “Removing government-imposed barriers to energy innovation would foster a stronger economy and, in turn, a cleaner environment,” write Heritage experts.
