Dear Friend,
From our bedroom window, we can see a 150-year-old lighthouse that has weathered countless storms and served as a beacon for those floundering in the darkness.

This particular lighthouse has had quite a history: it has been battered by storms, torched by soldiers, dismantled and its parts hidden for safekeeping, withstood eroding beaches and shifting stands, nearly been flooded by rising waters, drowned at sea, resurrected time and again, and then, after more than a 100 years of service, the lighthouse was given new life, restored to its former beauty and placed at the mouth of a nearby bay.

Sometimes, when waking in the middle of the night, I wander over to the window just to watch the light from that lighthouse as it shines, steady and bright, through the darkness.

It is a powerful reminder of time passing for us, as well, and of the many storms we, too, have weathered with the grace of God, and of the work that must still be done—by all of us, each in our own way—to shine a light in the darkness.

Like the lighthouse, we continue to work, steadily and with purpose, to help those beset by life’s storms.
