You may have heard that tomorrow’s election is the most important in your lifetime. It’s not. That was in 2016. But it is still very important because it will decide who has control of the House and Senate, which means whether the Democratic agenda (that Senator Manchin agrees with) can still pass the Senate and whether the Senate can keep confirming the President's nominations for District and Circuit Court judges at an impressive pace.
History says Republicans will retake the House majority and that seems likely, but every seat counts both now and going into the 2024 elections when history is more open-minded. There are governor races that will be hugely impactful as more and more issues are decided at the state level.
Christian nationalists are on ballots in many states and some of them think that's a selling point. Election deniers are running for state and local positions so they can be in charge of elections in 2024. These people have to be stopped before they win their first election.
If you’re reading this you have probably already voted or plan to vote tomorrow. Secular voters show an impressive rate of civic involvement. Even so, maybe there is someone you can help get to the polls or someone you can talk into voting. Especially young people, who participate at a much higher rate in presidential election years than in off-year elections. They need to become regular voters as soon as possible.
If you haven’t already seen it, the Secular Coalition has a secular voter scorecard that shows you how your representatives have voted on secular issues and how they did or did not support other legislation. Please use it to educate yourself on the bills that are important to the secular community and the positions of your legislators.
Wear that “I Voted” sticker tomorrow. And if it somehow comes up in a conversation, you can let people know you’re a secular voter like millions of other people.
