LULAC CONGRATULATES THE HOUSTON ASTROS TEAM ON WORLD SERIES WIN WITH ITS 15
LATINO PLAYERS

Nation's Oldest and Largest Latino Civil Rights Organization Salutes Team's
Diversity with Mexican, Venezuelan, Puerto Rican, Dominican, and Cuban
Afro-Latino Star Athletes
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Washington, DC – The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) took a time
out this weekend from its steady civil rights work to champion advocacy through
sports that reflect America's growing diversity. The 2022 Major League Baseball
World Series winners, the Houston Astros, have millions of Latinos across the
country cheering a team that has some of the most recognized Latino and
Afro-Latino baseball players in professional sports.
"Today, diehard Latino baseball fans in Houston, across Texas, and the nation are
screaming Puro Astros!" says Domingo García, LULAC national president. "With all
this Latino talent, maybe we should start calling the team Los Astros de Houston!
A look at the roster says it all. They have José Urquidy from Mexico, Bryan
Abreu, Cristian Javier, Héctor Neris, Framber Valdez, and Jeremy Peña from the
Dominican Republic. Also, three Cubans are on the team, including Yuli Gurriel,
Aledmys Díaz, and Yordan Alvarez. From Puerto Rico, the Astros have two catchers,
Christian Vázquez, and Martin Maldonado. José Altuve and Luis García are from
Venezuela, and Mauricio Dubón is from Honduras. This is only the second time in
60 seasons that the team wins the World Series, and for all Latino baseball fans
across the country and Puerto Rico, there is a great sense of pride that the team
is us!" says Garcia.
"Congratulations to the Houston Astros for their World Series victory and for
having a Latina on their team roster with Julia Morales as the Astros' official
field reporter," says Lupe Torres, LULAC national board member and vice-president
for the Southwest. "Ms. Morales has shown during her ten years reporting on the
Astros that she is very knowledgeable of the game, adds wonderful color
commentary to the coverage, and is adept in two cultures and two languages. She
is an outstanding role model for millions of Latina youths and women that they
can achieve the pinnacle too," says Torres.

"Texas LULAC adds its voice to the felicidades to Los Astros," says Rodolfo
Rosales Jr., Texas LULAC state director. "Baseball is a tremendous pastime
favorite in many Latin American countries and our Latino culture across the USA
and Puerto Rico. We cannot say enough about how our young children and teenagers
in sports look up to these athletes because they also look and speak like them.
When they wear that uniform, all the Astros are one team, and that message
inspires our kids to believe they belong and can achieve great things along with
everyone else in America," adds Rosales.
