Welcomed U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary, Xavier Becerra, to the Rio Grande Valley
On Thursday, October 27, I hosted U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary, Xavier Becerra in South Texas.

Secretary Becerra and I started off the day visiting Tropical Texas Behavioral Health where we spoke with local leaders, health care professionals, law enforcement officers, and educators about mental health and substance abuse programs.

Our community is in dire need of investment and solutions as many South Texans face mental health and substance abuse hardships and challenges to accessing critical care. I was honored to join local leaders to shed some light on the resources needed to support South Texans.

Later, we visited Nuestra Clinica del Valle where we spoke to experts about the impact of diabetes, insulin prices, and the newly passed Inflation Reduction Act in the Valley. We have one of the highest rates of diabetes in the nation and the highest rate of uninsured in the state of Texas.

No one should be paying astronomical prices for lifesaving medication that is produced at only $10 a vial. Thankfully, the Inflation Reduction Act would cap out of pocket costs for insulin at $35 per month for those on Medicare Part D. We can and must do more to make sure South Texans have access to affordable and quality health care services to meet our full potential.

Met with Students from Mercedes Early College Academy
I was lucky enough to meet with some of South Texas’ best and brightest on October 27th at the Mercedes Early College Academy at their College and Career fair.

We talked about their plans after graduation and the resources that are available to them to achieve their goals.

Thanks for having me!

Spoke with Edcouch-Elsa High School Students
I had the pleasure of speaking with students at Edcouch-Elsa High School on Friday, October 28th about the importance of voting, how Congress works, what issues are important to them and what I am doing to help.

It is our job to prepare our students to enter the workforce and meet their potential. Thankfully, South Texas has some of the best educators who have stepped up to the plate and provide first-rate education. I have no doubt our students are ready to meet the challenges of tomorrow. We have the best and brightest right here in the Rio Grande Valley and I can’t wait to see what they’ll do next.

My RGV Partnership
I was honored to accept the Advocate for American Business Award from the Rio Grande Valley Partnership this past Wednesday, November 2nd.

As a previous small business owner, myself, I know how hard it is to get your business up and running and then to keep the doors open. The COVID-19 pandemic made that many times harder, forcing many to close their doors.

I fought to ensure the Rio Grande Valley had the resources to keep employees on the payroll, doors open, and to pay rent. Since coming to Congress, I have supported policies that bolster our economy, provide access to capital, and support small and medium sized businesses. I will continue to follow through on this work in my next term.
