Thanks to the critical work of House Democrats, Congress just uncovered a bombshell plot by backers of a proposed Alaskan mining project to expand its scope after regulators approved it, all while lying about their intentions .

According to a Congressional report released last week, top executives from the Pebble Limited Partnership, which seeks to develop Alaska’s Pebble Mine, told Congress they had “no current plans” for expanding the proposed mining project while at the same time touting expansion plans to potential investors .

This is serious, John. Even without expansion, the Pebble Mine would have introduced up to 10 billion tons of poisonous mining waste into Bristol Bay’s headwaters , jeopardizing the ecosystems of the salmon, bears, eagles, wolves, and other wildlife that inhabit the region. An expanded project would’ve brought even more devastation to the area.

Companies like Pebble think they can game the system and skirt federal permitting regulations, but our SEEC members are fighting every day in Congress to hold them accountable. Their important work, however, is only possible thanks to our House majority. If Republicans take back control of Congress, they will undoubtedly allow dangerous projects like this to go forward.

Election Day is TOMORROW, and we need to ensure we not only send our SEEC members back to Washington for another term but also defend our House majority so they can keep fighting to protect critical ecosystems like the Bristol Bay watershed.
