Incoming state Senate President Kathleen Passidomo has suggested that if the Republican Party of Florida achieves a supermajority, they may work to expand the Parental Rights in Education bill. Passidomo, who assumes the Senate President role in November, says that the legislature may look to broaden the scope of regulatory language in the bill if given the opportunity. “It’s really important that parents of any school-aged child have the right to make decisions for those kids … if we have the supermajority we’re looking for in the House and the Senate we may be able to expand that bill,” she said. GOVERNOR RON DESANTIS Florida’s Public Universities Have the Lowest Cost of Earning a Degree in the Nation Over the past four years, Governor DeSantis has held the line on tuition while ensuring Florida’s higher education system is the best in the nation. Recently, the College Board’s “Annual Trends in College Pricing” report confirmed that the cost of a bachelor’s degree for the 2022-23 academic year at Florida’s public universities is now the lowest in the country. This year, U.S. News & World Report also ranked Florida as No. 1 for tuition and fees and the No. 1 state for higher education overall since its rankings' inception in 2017. A college degree should not put our students into a lifetime of debt,” said Governor Ron DeSantis. “Florida’s public college and university system is number one in the country because we put students first and this achievement proves we are on the right track. We will continue to prioritize offering a world-class education at an affordable price, providing the greatest value for our students.” With a continued emphasis on affordability, the average State University System student pays less than $3,400 for a bachelor’s degree after factoring in Florida’s investment in Bright Futures and other financial aid, showing a decrease five years in a row. Florida has held tuition and fees flat since 2014-2015 compared to a 17 percent increase nationally. The State University System recently announced a 12 percent five-year increase in graduation rates and a 49 percent year-over-year drop in the cost-to-the-student for a bachelor’s degree. Florida’s State University System has 12 public universities and more than 430,000 students, making it the second largest in the nation. “The significant investments Governor DeSantis and legislative leaders have made in higher education are pivotal to holding down the tuition and fee costs for Florida’s students, even as they rise across the country,” said Brian Lamb, Chair of the Board of Governors. “This success reflects the emphasis our Board and university leadership have placed on accountability, performance, and cost, all of which attract the best and brightest students who seek the exceptional educational experience Florida’s institutions offer.” While the federal government has attempted to place the burden of student debt on taxpayers, Florida’s 12 public universities have kept costs low and reduced the amount of student loans needed to earn a degree. Within the State University System, over 17,000 fewer resident undergraduate students took out loans in 2020-21 compared to 2019-20, while 75% of resident undergraduate students did not take out any loans. Increased financial aid, such as Bright Futures and the Florida Student Assistance Grant, increased graduation rates, and consistently low tuition have resulted in fewer resident undergraduate students taking out loans and lower loan default rates. Governor Ron DeSantis said: “We are seeing such overwhelming enthusiasm because of the policy accomplishments we’ve been able to deliver for the people of Florida. We have ensured parental rights in education, provided the largest tax relief package in state history, kept our communities safe, and restored our Everglades and natural resources. We’ve achieved so much in the past four years for Florida, and we’ve only just begun. Together, we will Keep Florida Free!” First Lady Casey DeSantis said: “We recently announced that 1.1 million Florida mamas have been mobilized through Mamas for DeSantis, and today’s historic announcement is further proof that Florida is fired up and ready to work hard to re-elect our Governor. Our incredible volunteers and supporters have powered the largest movement of parents in Florida history to re-elect Governor DeSantis.” BACKGROUND: Florida First Lady Casey DeSantis recently announced one million Mamas for DeSantis have been mobilized to help re-elect Governor Ron DeSantis. Republicans passed Democrats in voting in Miami-Dade County — even with several days of early voting remaining, along with election day, typically the biggest GOP advantage. As CBS Miami put it: “In an extraordinary sign of trouble for Democrats and a good omen for the GOP in Florida ahead of Election Day, the number of registered Republicans voting in Miami-Dade County surpassed Democrats on Wednesday – one day after President Joe Biden visited the area on a campaign swing.” Read more: [link removed] DeSantis Endorsements Less than a week before the midterm elections, Gov. Ron DeSantis promoted candidates from across the country in competitive areas. Florida’s governor has risen in popularity and has been applauded by conservatives outside of Florida for leadership during the pandemic. DeSantis voiced his support for Kari Lake, the Republican candidate for Arizona governor, and Blake Masters, the Republican candidate for U.S. Senate in Arizona. “The road to saving America from the woke Left goes right through Arizona, by electing Kari Lake and Blake Masters,” DeSantis said. Kari Lake faces Democrat Katie Hobbs while Black Masters is going against Democrat U.S. Sen. Mark Kelly. The Pennsylvania U.S. Senate race is another high-profile race where Republican Dr. Mehmet Oz faces Democrat Lt. Gov. John Fetterman. “Pennsylvanians — get out & vote for leaders who will reject the Left’s power-grabs & stand up for your rights,” DeSantis said as he threw support behind Oz. DeSantis and his wife have supported Adam Laxalt in the race for U.S. Senate. The First Lady traveled to Nevada in September for a “Ladies for Laxalt” event. Laxalt’s opponent is Democrat U.S. Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto.“Adam Laxalt is the fighter Nevada needs in the U.S. Senate. He will restore law and order, put Nevadans first, and stand up to the Biden Regime,” DeSantis said. DeSantis praised Republican Ohio U.S. Senate candidate J.D. Vance who faces Democrat Rep. Tim Ryan. “For too long, the D.C. machine has served special interests at the expense of the American people,” DeSantis said. “JD Vance is running to change this. Ohioans need him in the U.S. Senate to represent their values and fight the corrupt policies destroying our nation.” The governor also gave shout-outs to Republican candidate for governor in Kansas Derek Schmidt, Republican Oklahoma gubernatorial candidate Kevin Stitt, Wisconsin Republican candidates Tim Michels and Ron Johnson, Maine gubernatorial candidate Paul LePage, Arkansas gubernatorial candidate Sarah Huckabee, and New Mexico gubernatorial candidate Mark Ronchetti. The legal team secured more than $3 billion for Florida through historic litigation—holding major opioid manufacturers, distributors and pharmacies accountable for their roles in the opioid crisis. The Consumer Protection team recovered more than $469 million through work to shut down scams and protect consumers. The Medicaid Fraud Control Unit obtained more than $160 million in settlements and judgments. “We strive to serve the public and be good stewards of taxpayer funds,” Attorney General Moody said. “I hope this award reaffirms to all Floridians that we take this role very seriously and will always work to do the most good with the state resources entrusted to our agency.” Watch more here: [link removed] CFO JIMMY PATRONIS CFO Jimmy Patronis Returns More Than $35 Million in Unclaimed Property in October Florida Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis announced that more than $35 million in unclaimed property was returned to Floridians in October. One of the main themes in Simpson’s campaign is to bring back “common sense” to the Department of Agriculture after Democrat Commissioner Nikki Fried has been in office since 2019. He indicated that he wants to streamline the Department to address problems before they escalate. Simpson said he wants to work with lawmakers “right out of the gate” to help Floridians. One of his plans includes modernizing the forestry division by stationing drones around the state to address forest fires. “If you have a forest fire that drone can go up immediately, identify the source of the fire, potentially where it started, what direction it is moving in, and it will save our firefighters on the ground a lot of time, a lot of energy and ultimately a lot of lives,” Simpson said. When it comes to the process of handling firearms permits, Simpson said he wants to make changes “fairly quickly.” “I believe that we will hire a team that will come in and make sure that we are processing permits as quickly as humanly possible, that’s very consistent, that we’re doing the process thoroughly but very timely,” Simpson said. “And then if there is a constitutional carry passed, which I believe there’s a good chance it will be, then we will still have the concealed carry because a lot of Floridians will still want to conceal carry even though they will have their constitutional rights to constitutional carry. So, there will still be a process there.” Addressing the issue of foreign countries purchasing real estate in Florida, Simpson also said he will work hard on “outlawing the idea that our foreign enemies can buy real estate in the state of Florida, farmlands and ag lands – we’re also putting a bill together that’s gonna address this issue with credit card companies trying to identify people within the state that buy guns or ammunition and things of that nature.” “When you think about the supply chain in agriculture, it’s something that we are very interested in making sure that we continue to stay ahead of the curve so that we don’t have food shortages,” Simpson said. “We need to make sure that a trade agreement or federal assistance after an emergency like Hurricane Ian is tailor-made for the state of Florida and fits our needs. It’s not a one size fits all and Florida needs to have an agriculture commissioner that understands that.” SENATOR MARCO RUBIO Senator Rubio Gets Support and Respect from National Law Enforcement Senator Marco Rubio spoke to the National Association of Police Organizations Wednesday at the group's Fall Seminar, thanking them for keeping our communities safe and for supporting his reelection.
