Hi friends,

Cassidy here, Andrew’s campaign manager. I’ve spent the better part of the last year running alongside Andrew, so I wanted to reach out personally one more time. Not to ask you for money or to volunteer like we’ve been bugging you about for many months now, but to tell you what this race means to me personally.

I grew up in Brandon, Florida. I started preschool at Nativity Catholic School when I was 4 years old and graduated a decade later as an 8th grader. I went to swimming parties at Brandon Swim and Tennis, waved cheerleading pom-poms from the sidelines for the Pinecrest Pilots, volunteered at Hawthorne nursing home, spent Friday nights at the Brandon mall and AMC Regency 20, and played at Paul Sanders Park. This community raised me.

So when I graduated from college and finally had the opportunity to start working in politics professionally, it was an honor to serve my fellow constituents of this community in our former State Rep. Adam Hattersley’s legislative office. Around this time was when I first met Andrew, and boy, did I not know the journey I would eventually be in for with him.

About a year ago I reached out to Andrew’s fabulous legislative aide Valerie and asked to get on his schedule for a coffee meeting. We met at the Winthrop Starbucks and I told him I wanted to run this race this year. I knew it would be a tough one, but if I was going to be a part of any race this [crazy] year I wanted it to be this one. There was too much at stake for the future of the balance of power in Tallahassee, and this community–the place where my parents still live just blocks away from where they raised me–was too important to me.

Andrew Learned is a kind and selfless man. I poke fun at him for having a mind that runs a mile a minute that drives me crazy more often than not, but it’s because he is constantly thinking about creative ways he can be helpful to others. He keeps you laughing even when you want to yell and scream [sometimes at him…] from stress. And he genuinely cares about the people he represents. Whether he’s just sitting in his office commenting back and forth about the damn roads on the Riverview Traffic Facebook page, tutoring a kid at his learning center, or hosting a meeting of local veterans at a VFW hall–he lights up, because he cares so much and genuinely loves this work.

I cannot overstate the importance of the choice you have between Andrew and his opponent on Tuesday. This is a choice between someone who could not care any less about politics and genuinely just does this work to be an advocate for his community, and someone who has explicitly said they were recruited to run for this seat in order to be another soldier for the majority party in Tallahassee.

And as Andrew and I have been shouting about to you all for so many months, this is the seat that will determine whether or not Republicans in Florida gain a veto-proof supermajority in the state legislature. No matter what you believe or where on the ideological or political spectrum you fall, you have to recognize how bad for democracy it will be to have one party in charge of a state of nearly 22 million people that could do anything it wanted without any checks from any dissenting opposition. Floridians and our issues and priorities are too diverse and complex for a system that would effectively silence healthy public debate about what’s best for us. And I can promise you that if elected, Andrew’s opponent would not be as accessible to you or attentive to your issues as Andrew is and will always be–no matter the outcome on Tuesday night.

This campaign was never about which shade of red or blue this district is, partisan voter registration advantages, or money in campaign bank accounts—it was always about just talking to neighbors about what’s important to them. And I think you all can agree that’s exactly what Andrew has done, with tens of thousands of you for two years now.

Things get dark here in Florida, but Andrew’s leadership is the very brightest spot in the Sunshine State. He represents us so well, so we must send him back to Tallahassee to continue his good work for us. This community and its people mean so much to me, and I believe so wholeheartedly that we will be better off with Andrew as our representative. So I’m asking you to get out and vote to re-elect him this Tuesday.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you for your support of this campaign. We’ll see you on the other side.

Your neighbor,

Cassidy
