Folks,
Before I begin, I want you to know just how much I appreciate you taking this journey with me as we’ve fought for a new Arkansas during this campaign. With Tuesday’s election drawing closer, I want to share with you a story from my childhood and how it shaped me into the person and candidate I am today.
I learned at an early age what it meant to have a dream dashed. As a young boy in Pine Bluff, I had my heart set on becoming an astronaut when I grew up, and I dreamt of one day seeing outer space myself. But because I was born deaf in my right ear, I’d never be able to make that dream come true.
I’m sure a discovery that life-changing would push plenty of others to find another passion, and I can’t say I would blame them. But I’d found something I loved, and I wasn’t going to give it up that easily. Although I’d never be able to make it into space, I knew I could still be an asset in so many other ways. And my persistence paid off: A full scholarship from NASA changed my life forever, helping me attend Morehouse College for Physics and Math, and then MIT for Nuclear Engineering and a PhD in Urban Planning.
We’re at a similar crossroads here in Arkansas — I feel it each and every day. We joined this race as underdogs in a so-called “red” state, facing a Republican opponent who many believe is guaranteed to win. I’m sure those odds scared off plenty of other potential challengers, and I can’t say I would blame them. But I love this state and its people too much to back down from a difficult fight.
And guess what? Our persistence is paying off. The folks of Arkansas are seeing our passion and believing in our vision. That’s why on Tuesday, Arkansas may very well make history by electing its first Black, disabled governor.
That little kid who dreamed of becoming an astronaut would be in awe of everything we’ve accomplished.
I appreciate you for being on this team and reading this story. Before you go, and only if you can, please consider chipping in to our campaign before Election Day. [[link removed]]
