Our research shows we’ve got a steep climb to fight ballot roll-off.
John, we’re concerned.
The good news is that voter turnout is high this year. But the bad news is that a lot of Democrats are likely to skip their state legislative candidates on the ballot.
We’ve been sounding the alarm:
Our Sister District researchers tackled the question “Are Democratic voters voting for every race on the ballot?” What we discovered was resounding: the answer is NO.
What’s worse is that Republican voters are voting all the way down the ballot. In our recent study, state legislative Democrats got fewer votes than Democrats higher on the ballot almost 80% of the time, while the same thing happened to state legislative Republicans less than 38% of the time.
Bottom line? Democrats experience ballot roll-off at the state legislative level much more frequently than do Republicans.
Free and fair elections, abortion access, and so much more are on the ballot this year, and progress runs through our state legislatures. We’re standing firm and not ceding an inch to the right-wing.
But we must make sure people vote for progressives all the way down the ballot.
