AG Dana Nessel is warning voters about exactly what’s at stake this November. If we don’t keep the Michigan AG seat, it means Michigan’s electoral votes aren’t safe in 2024. AG Nessel isn’t being hyperbolic — her opponent is Matt DePerno, who is a legitimate threat to free and fair elections in our country.
DePerno doesn’t believe in the basic tenets of democracy. After the 2020 election, he met with Trump’s staff on the day of the Capitol insurrection, spread conspiracy theories about electronic voting machines, and launched legal challenges seeking to overturn results in Michigan. Luckily his attempts failed, but just imagine if he is elected as Michigan’s next AG. There’s no doubt he would use his power to try to impact the 2024 election.
If just one election denier is elected to a state AG seat, it could have dramatic effects on America’s electoral process. Michigan isn’t the only AG race where Democrats must win in order to protect our democracy. Election deniers like Sigal Chattah in Nevada and Abe Hamadeh in Arizona are running for state AG, and they both pose the same threat to democracy as Matt DePerno. Donald Trump lost by just a few states in 2020 – we aren’t kidding when we say these AG races matter!
