Lots of people have stories about why they applied for a job. I wanted to quickly tell you mine.
In 2013, I was working in the Attorney General’s Office here in Massachusetts. I was chief of the Civil Rights Division, and I loved that job.
I got to lead the first successful state challenge to the Defense of Marriage Act and worked to take on big banks for deceptive practices in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis.
It was work that I knew made a difference, and that made me excited to get up every morning.
So when I had the opportunity, I decided to apply for a new job in the same office — to be the Attorney General herself. I began a long interview with the people of Massachusetts.
From the start, we knew it would be a long shot. No one really knew who I was. None of the big endorsements went my way, and I had way, way less campaign cash than my opponent.
But none of that was going to stop me. Instead, I laid out my vision and promised to serve as “The People’s Lawyer” — an advocate who would stand up for the people of Massachusetts against powerful interests. That was the sort of Attorney General I thought Massachusetts needed.
It turns out, the voters agreed. Against all odds, I won that race. So I stuck to the promises I’d made.
We took on opioid companies for devastating our communities.
We sued big oil for lying about climate change.
We stood up to predatory lenders, discriminatory employers, and powerful interests.
All in all, we returned $7 billion to taxpayers and protected the rights of people around our state.
Now, I’m applying for a new job: to serve as our next Governor. Together, we can solve the new challenges our state is facing, like the rising cost of living, impacts of climate change, and threats to our reproductive rights. Together, we can get stuff done — just like we have in the AG’s Office.
This last weekend before Election Day, my team and I are making our final rounds across the state to connect with undecided voters and share our message. If you can chip in anything to power our campaign in this final stretch, I’d so appreciate it. No donation is too small to make a difference.
