This crucial midterm election is making clear that we’ve got to keep building progressive power in Congress.

Rep. Jamaal Bowman is a progressive champion who is deeply rooted in his community, so he understands that our communities are tired of bandaids and incremental change. He is unafraid to push for the bold, transformational policies we need in order to meet the scale of our problems.

I’ve been proud to cosponsor Jamaal’s bills to take on the racist great replacement theory, to support Black history education programs, to make a Green New Deal for public schools, and more. And together, we’ve introduced legislation to address our country’s massive utility shutoff crisis, which disproportionately affects communities of color and low-wealth communities.

My team founded the Rooted in Community Leadership PAC to train and support candidates like Jamaal, because we need more people in office who will fight for a multi-racial democracy that serves all of us, not just the wealthy few.

In the richest country in the history of the world, it is outrageous that millions of people struggle with utility insecurity, substandard services, and inhumane shutoffs. With extreme weather events increasing with climate change, this issue is more urgent than ever.

Jamaal Bowman and I are making sure that essential utility services are treated as human rights―including water, sanitation, electricity, heating, cooling, and internet access. Our basic human needs should not be treated as commodities for profit.

We’re also fighting to reinvest in communities of color. Centuries of disinvestment in Black communities and systemic racism in our institutions have led to continually widening inequities. For example, the wealth gap between Black and white families has expanded since the civil rights movement. The gap between white and Black home ownership is the widest it has been in 50 years.

While too many of our colleagues in Congress are willing to accept this unjust status quo, Jamaal is an essential leader and ally who recognizes that our communities deserve urgent and bold changes.

Rep. Jamaal Bowman is a key part of our Squad, creating a Democratic Party and a Congress that delivers for working people and marginalized communities across the country. And programs like my team’s Rooted In Community PAC are building the progressive bench in races up and down the ballot so we can keep building the progressive power we need.
