Weekend Reading

Dear John,

This Tuesday, Nov. 8, is Election Day across the United States. We hope for a fair, peaceful election, where voters and poll workers can freely participate—without fear of intimidation. If you do witness harassment in public, it helps to know how to intervene while keeping everyone safe. To learn more, see our do’s and don’ts for bystander intervention [link removed] .

Here are this week's picks to inform and support your activism:

Young leaders working for social change: [link removed] This year, AFSC launched Emerging Leaders for Liberation to help young people strengthen their social justice and leadership skills and organize local campaigns. Our inaugural cohort included 30 people from 15 states. Meet three of this year’s participants.

Statement on the peace testimony and Ukraine: [link removed] AFSC joins with other Quaker groups in affirming our commitment to seeking peaceful alternatives to armed conflict and ensuring the human costs of war are not forgotten. Whichever way this war ends, we know that healing and sustainable peacemaking will take more than a generation, and will only be possible through inclusive and sustainable processes.

Take action for justice for Shadi Khoury and all Palestinian children: [link removed] Thank you to everyone who contacted Congress last week to speak out against the Israeli military’s detention of Shadi Khoury. During Shadi’s court appearance on Nov. 2, his parents were shocked to learn that Israeli soldiers had again beaten Shadi and other detained children. After the hearing, Shadi was returned to detention even though no charges were announced against him. If you haven’t already, urge Congress to demand the release of Shadi and all Palestinian children in Israeli detention.

Understanding “Copaganda”: [link removed] How do popular culture and the news media shape our impressions of the criminal legal system and policing? And what are the effects on policymaking and elections? If you missed our latest Community Safety Beyond Policing webinar, check out this recap.

History: How Atlanta played a critical role in anti-apartheid organizing: [link removed] In 1985, Atlanta, Georgia, was a center in U.S. opposition to apartheid in South Africa. AFSC’s Atlanta office coordinated a national boycott against Coca-Cola, which is headquartered in the city. (Jacobin)

Our largest matching gift opportunity of 2022: [link removed] Will you help secure a $500k match for peace and justice? Make a gift of any size by 11/21. Thank you for your support!
